Hi everyone! I just wanted to update you on some things that have been going on here at HFFG. Things are always changing and moving forward and lately, there has been an unusually high amount of chaos!

Natural Remedies

For one thing, due to some recent regulations, I am no longer able to share on HFFG one of the most valuable components of our family’s natural health lifestyle. It has been quite difficult because I feel as though I am withholding this crucial health information from all of HFFG’s awesome fans. Consequently, I’ve set up a personal, private group to share that information. If you haven’t joined that group yet, go here to see and join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/387141488116775/

New Clients

Also, I have had quite a huge influx of new clients lately. So if you are considering letting me help you with your health, be sure to check with me first to see if I am ready for new clients!

Home Test Panels

Another new thing here at HFFG is the opportunity to order home test panels for various things including hormones, thyroid function, adrenal health, vitamin D, and more. I partner with ZRT Laboratory to offer my clients and customers saliva, blood spot, and urine test kits at a discount so those without an insurance and/or without a local healthcare professional can do these tests in the comfort of their home without having to do a blood draw!

Many times, doctors reject the request of a patient to order tests for things like hormone, thyroid, and adrenal function because they do not understand the importance of these things, nor do they often recognize the symptoms of them. Many doctors inform my clients that these tests are not necessary because the only answer is lifetime medication, which could not be farther from the truth!

Additionally, many doctors only order a TSH test for patients presenting with symptoms of poor thyroid function. The TSH is only a very small piece of the puzzle to determine the health of one’s thyroid. Many of the ZRT lab test panels include not only TSH but other things necessary for assessing thyroid health including T3, T4, and thyroid antibodies.

Testing by blood spot and saliva is not only more convenient but it is just as accurate! Saliva testing has been used in scientific testing for decades and has been shown to be highly accurate. It is the most reliable way to measure free, bioavailable hormone activity — those hormones actually doing their job at the cellular level. Standard blood and urine tests do not measure bioavailable hormone levels.

Blood spot testing provides results that correlate extremely well to serum testing results in terms of accuracy, but without the cost and inconvenience of conventional blood drawing. Each test kit that involves blood spot testing, such as those for testing thyroid function, include a lancet to prick the finger and obtain blood spots that are put on a card included in the kit.

These tests can now be ordered in HFFG’s Store here. Prices include shipping to you and shipping the sample(s) back to the lab (for orders within the United States). To see some of the tests that are available and the prices, go here: http://healthyfamiliesforgod.com/store/?slug=index&cPath=27

Kombucha

I also finally have a nice stock of kombucha scobys and the weather is cooler (which is safer for shipping kombucha starter kits) so if you’ve wanted to learn how to make this delicious, probiotic-rich detox drink, check out more information about it here

 On The Home Front…

My daughter milking one of our goats!

As for the Poff family, things have been quite busy getting new dairy goats, more chickens, and preparing for winter! I have spent late nights researching and learning as much as I can on how to keep our goats as healthy as possible naturally the same way I’ve done for our own family. They are getting all kinds of healthy things like Icelandic kelp, raw organic apple cider vinegar, nettles, nutritional yeast, lots of minerals and vitamin C, and herbal dewormers. The same way I have done with my family, I have vowed to avoid GMO’s in their diet and avoid chemical medications/vaccines in their bodies and environment! It has been working wonderfully and proves that when the body is given what it needs, there is less sickness and fewer health problems!

I am working on learning to make goat’s milk soap and recently rendered some tallow from grass-fed cows to make some tallow lotion which many people find much more helpful for that wintery dry skin and things like eczema and cradle cap. I hope to have it available for purchase in my website store soon!

Thanks everyone for all of your amazing support of HFFG. You are each a blessing and encouragement to me and I hope to be just a tiny bit of a blessing to you and your family as well!

~Sara

A Better Way to Soothe Skin and Rashes

It’s true what they say–this mama fixes everything with breastmilk, coconut oil, and essential oils. Except as many people with skin issues have discovered, even those may not be enough.

In my quest for the perfect skin moisturizer, I have made homemade lotions and creams with a myriad of natural ingredients–from shea butter to coconut oil and I’ll admit to even sneaking in some breastmilk in one batch.

Of course I loved the way the batch made with cocoa butter made me smell (who wouldn’t want to smell like chocolate all day?!) but it didn’t do what I wanted for my skin.

Then I stumbled across the incredible benefits of tallow–a fat rendered from beef. Tallow contains abundant natural fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and other related properties which are found only in animal fats and which all promote skin health. In fact, many skin conditions are caused by a deficiency of these nutrients.

Tallow also contains fats like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) (much more present in beef fat from grass-fed animals), which has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, and palmitoleic acid, which has natural antimicrobial properties.

I purchased a jar of balm made from grass-fed tallow online and could not believe how well it worked. My husband is a drywall contractor so rubbing his hands along the drywall sheets all day long sucks the moisture right out of his hands. He ends up with very large, gaping cracks in his hands in the wintertime. We did two things one winter and noticed the best improvement of anything we’ve ever done–we used the tallow balm and he began taking fermented cod liver oil daily.

But the price tag on the tallow balm was a bit steep–$15 plus shipping for a tiny 2-ounce jar. I knew I couldn’t keep doing that! So I set out to make my own. And when I did, I started sharing it with others. And they reported back that it worked phenomenally for eczema and other rashes as well as dry skin.  I was excited!

But then I spent an entire winter emailing and contacting local grass-fed beef farmers to find some grass-fed beef fat to purchase and render into fat. No success. Fat from grass-fed beef proved to be difficult to come by!

I put the word out and eventually, through a great friend with some great connections, I was able to obtain a limited amount of grass-fed beef fat. And now my daughter and I have been busy working hard to make this great healing balm available to my awesome customers and clients!

To make our grass-fed beef tallow balm, we first chop the beef fat (NOT my favorite job! Nah it’s not too bad) and bake it very at a very low temperature in a strainer over a stockpot for many hours to render the tallow.

Once that is done, we strain the liquid fat and place it in the 4-ounce jars with a very small amount of olive oil so that it is more easily spreadable. Without it, the tallow is too hard at room temperature. Then we add only therapeutic-grade essential oils,* cover tightly, and label.

(*It is against a particular company’s policy to use their essential oils in products that will be sold. HFFG will respect that while still using therapeutic-grade essential oils made without any chemicals, fillers, etc. for these products.)

In addition to the benefits of tallow for skin, tallow has an excellent shelf life. It is stable at room temperature for many months.  The following blends are currently available in 4-ounce glass jars:

Healing

This blend contains lavender and copaiba essential oils, chosen specifically for their soothing, healing, and anti-inflammatory properties. This combination was specifically formulated for skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, and chapped skin.

Rejuvenating

This blend contains geranium essential oil to provide a flowery, feminine smell while nourishing your skin at the same time. Geranium has been used back to the times of the Egyptians for promoting beautiful, radiant skin and many other things.

Cleansing

This balm contains melaleuca alternifolia, an essential oil that is traditionally used in skin care for its cleansing effects. It is commonly used for fungal rashes including cradle cap, toenail fungus, and ringworm as well as acne, psoriasis, and other skin problems.

(More blends to come!)

Shelf life: Tallow lasts for many months, if not longer, at room temperature so tallow balm does not need to be refrigerated. The tallow balm is more easily applied and more spreadable when left at room temperature.

Safety: The ratio of essential oils contained in each of the blends were designed to be adequate amounts for therapeutic benefits but low enough to be used safely on people of all ages, including babies. Do not apply in the eyes.

Smell: Because tallow balm consists mostly of grass-fed beef tallow for the nourishing properties it contains, you may notice a slightly beefy smell to the product. Some essential oil blends tend to have a more mild smell which can cause the tallow smell to come through more.

**If you purchase unscented, you will likely need to melt down the oil in order to mix in your own essential oils or other fragrances.

Because this product is handmade, each batch may differ.

A little goes a long way!

Here’s what people are saying about my homemade tallow balm:

It’s the only thing that helped my son’s eczema (along with the necessary diet changes). It immediately helped with the itchiness, or at least it seemed like it (he had it from 2-6 months old, so it’s hard to say for sure that it instantly helped, but since he would stop fussing and squirming, it’s safe to assume I think…) and it really helped the healing process. My hands got really cracked after not taking my fish oil and going out in the cold, dry air, and I put the tallow lotion on and it soothed. I really recommend it!  In comparison to store-bought lotions and creams, it’s way better. Even Aveeno has stuff in it that I don’t want on, in, or around my body, along with many other “natural” products. I highly recommend Sara’s!

It’s amazing! Worth every penny!

A Day In My Life…

$

I often get asked, “How do you do it all?” And I guess I just don’t know the answer to that really! So I decided to sit down and take inventory of a day in my life!

Of course my initial thoughts are that I just don’t sit down much, I rarely watch TV, never play computer games (tried playing Words with Friends once and it sucked so much time out of my day!) and I try to make the use of every moment. I am the kind of person that enjoys being busy especially at home. I find great joy in serving my family and doing my responsibilities. I also have some very hard-working, capable older children who can cook, clean, take care of animals, and help out a lot with the younger kids! My husband I work hard to instill a strong work ethic in them and teach them how to do everything they will need to do as an adult, as a parent, etc.

But most importantly, I think it’s because God has given me a lot of energy and good health!

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2:3-5)

Some of my day-to-day responsibilities include homeschooling 5 of 6 of my children (my oldest is in college), working from home as a natural health practitioner, studying for my naturopathy degree, cooking whole-food meals, shopping, paying the bills, balancing the checkbook, doing the accounting and paperwork for my hubby’s drywall business, and homesteading. God recently helped us fulfill our dream of owning a small hobby farm where we could homestead so we currently have 8 dairy goats, 5 chickens (for eggs), and are planning on getting more chickens, ducks, turkeys (for meat), and a large garden.

My hubby and I have been married for 15 years and we have 6 children–19, 13, 11 1/2, 9, 4, and 17 months. Our 11 1/2-year old is our only daughter–the rest are boys. :) (You can click here to read more About Me.) We have used the practice of ecological breastfeeding for the last few children to space them out naturally, provide them with an extended period of breastfeeding, and allow my body time to regain nutrients before subsequent pregnancies. You can read more about this here.

So anyway, here’s what a totally random day looks like. Things are crazy around here and every day is different, so this is by no means a full look at our life! I hesitated to share this as it is quite candid, but I hope it can help others gain some ideas for accomplishing some of the tasks we are given as Proverbs 31 & Titus 2 women!

9:30 a.m. Woke up. LATE. 17-month old kept me up LATE last night (midnight–and still wakes up 2x/night to nurse) so I guess I let myself sleep in. But no biggie–I remembered that Hubby and 13-year old left in the -22*F weather to pick up our Azure Standard order bright and early so that I could sleep in. (Azure Standard is a monthly dropsite co-op that delivers once a month to locations around the country. We buy organic grains for our animals, organic chicken feed, organic rolled oats for us, bulk organic apple cider vinegar, raw cheddar, and LOTS more things. It is a huge blessing to have this available!) My hubby came home last night from working out-of-town just so that I didn’t have to wake up early and take the kids out in the cold to pickup Azure. What a guy!

My 13-year old made coconut-flour blueberry muffins last night (breakfast is his job most mornings) so the other children were already eating those and drinking a glass of raw milk when I woke up. Normally we’d make green smoothies with breakfast but not today.

Baby still sleeping. So I drink a glass of lemon water and then sit down with a glass of raw milk and some muffins to eat while I check my emails and get back to clients’ as quickly as I can (if I can). And I realize I lost my time to exercise (Jilian Michaels’ video workout). I’m still sore from yesterday’s so it’s all good.

10:00 a.m. Baby woke up, toddles out to where I am, and does sign for “milk” as he always does when he sees me. He still doesn’t care for people food much and nurses just as often as he did as a little baby. But I am okay with that because sitting down to nurse him is how I get a lot of my work on the computer down as well as studying for my naturopathy classes!

My Squish must have the strongest hand muscles because he does the sign for milk all day long.

I nurse him while I check to see if the kids finished their chores before they start their schoolwork. A couple chores were overlooked so I ask them to take care of those before starting their school while I change the baby’s diaper and get him dressed. And it occurs to me that I’m still not dressed, but I figure I don’t have anywhere to go so I’ll stay in my yoga pants. :)

10:30 a.m. Kids start their schoolwork. We are an hour late but it happens. Baby and 4-year old play Play-Doh, 9-year old starts his reading and math, 11 1/2-year old is working on math, and the 13-year old is downstairs on the school computer doing Spanish. Between helping the 9-year old count by 5′s and the 11 1/2-year old work on prime factors, I seize the opportunity to get 3 gallons of kombucha started and a quart of water kefir going. I also clean up the kitchen the rest of the way–whatever didn’t get cleaned up this morning. Baby needs another diaper change so I do that and throw his dirty diaper into the laundry hamper with the other dirty cloth diapers.

12:00 p.m. Kombucha and water kefir are brewing and I realize I better figure out what to make for lunch. I haven’t gone shopping in a while and our organic produce co-op is tomorrow so I’m kinda flying by the seat of my pants for meals lately. We do this often to save money and use up what we have around the house. We’ll probably just have some leftover butternut squash lasagna from last night (I used slices of butternut squash in place of lasagna noodles and hid some grated beef liver in the ground beef) and some Bubbie’s fermented pickles that we got from our Azure order. I try to make doubles of most of our dinners so that we can have leftovers for lunch.

Baby is whining for me to carry him around so while I am starting to put him in the sling, hubby comes up from the basement where he is putting on the base shoe trim (he recently finished putting new floors in our house we just bought) and he takes baby downstairs with him. Again, what a guy!

But I’m hungry now! Nursing a 17-month old who still lives mostly off of mama’s milk takes a lot of calories! So I snack on some of the raw milk cheddar cheese we got from Azure. Quick check into Facebook and one of my local friends is adding to our group fermented cod liver oil order that I coordinate, so I jot that down. (Check out my post here about why we think fermented cod liver oil is so great!)

While lunch is warming up in the oven, I continue my research on goat minerals. Having a hard time finding some that meet my stringent criteria. All of them seem to have GMO fillers in them. Thankfully we have Thorvin Kelp that is giving them lots of good minerals, so we may just have to add in some separate high-quality mineral supplements…the research continues. Check in with Facebook and do my admin duty in our Titus 2 Girlfriends Worldwide group. What a wonderful bunch of women!

Daughter is outside letting the goats out of the barn and checking the animals’ water. Normally we let them out right away but with the temps so low, we waited until the sun was shining at least!

1:00 p.m. Lunch is finally warmed up. Everyone’s probably halfway full now because they also snacked on some of the raw milk cheese and everyone already ate their Bubbie’s pickles. Ah well! Baby just dumped the whole Lego bin out across the dining room floor and is playing with them. Maybe I’ll get to eat my whole lunch before he asks for milk!

2:00 p.m. Lunch is done and cleaned up, dishwasher is running, and another load of laundry is going. I work with the older kids on Science while the little boys play and the baby naps after I nursed him to sleep. We are currently working on Apologia Botany for science. Normally 2pm is about when we are done with schoolwork and time for me to get some of my HFFG work done with clients (it’s time I schedule appointments and Skype chats with clients) while baby naps but our late start has kinda messed that up so I’ll get done what I can today. Thankfully I don’t have any appointments or Skypes set up today.

3:00 p.m. Done with school for the day. We snack on some carrots and hummus. (It’s cheaper to make hummus homemade but lately I’ve been cheating and buying the organic hummus snack packs from Costco. They are delicious!) We’d normally have bell peppers and cucumbers too but with our every-other-week organic produce co-op tomorrow, we are out of pretty much everything! We munch on some roasted pumpkin seeds too.

4:00 p.m. Farm chores time. With it getting dark at 5pm, this is now when the older kids go out and do their farm chores. They bring all the animals clean water, fresh food/hay, make sure the goats’ minerals/kelp are full, gather the eggs from the coop, and close up the animals in the barn and the coop for the night. They also give our new LGD (livestock guardian dog–a great pyrenees) some socialization/training time with the goats. Being technically a puppy (12 months old), she still wants to play with them so hopefully she’ll realize soon enough that her play is too rough for the goats.

Baby wakes up from nap so I nurse him and then get dinner going. Tonight I’m going to have an easy dinner–fry up some salmon, bake some sweet potatoes, and saute up whatever greens we have left from produce co-op.

My friend and I were recently at a Weston A. Price Foundation chapter meeting where we were able to purchase a large amount of Alaskan salmon fresh from the fisherman for a great price because we purchased so much. ($12/pound!) Our dog loves it because she gets the leftover skin. :) (We are working on doing a raw dog food diet with her so we also puree up some veggies, kefir, and an egg for her food tonight in addition to some raw meat and bones.)

Squish is running and falls head first RIGHT into the corner of the entryway bench. I cringe (and cry a little with him) while Daddy checks to see if he is okay. He does the sign for milk so I nurse him while I check out his owie, rub some Frankincense oil on it, and pray over him. Despite a large purple bump forming, he stops nursing after a minute and gets up to go play cars with the boys. Half an hour later, the purple and red is gone and only a tiny bump remains, and he’s acting just fine. Thank God!

5:30 p.m. Dinner is served. One of our goals for 2015 is to read the Bible all the way through as a family. We do this reading at dinner time. Surprisingly, we are actually ahead today (January 13th–we are on the January 20th reading) so we can take our time and supplement the reading with additional info. For example, a few days ago we read about Job and the behemoth. We took out Ken Ham’s book on dinosaurs and read the section in there about the behemoth mentioned in the book of Job and how it most likely is referring to a brachiosaurus. Tonight we are reading about Abraham and the birth of Isaac.

6:30 p.m. Dinner chores. 13-year old starts dishes while the 11 1/2- year old goes to prepare the milking grains for the goats. She takes the soaked organic grains (Azure) that she started last night and adds molasses (also from Azure), freshly-crushed organic garlic (produce co-op), nettles, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast flakes (for B vitamins–Azure), minerals, organic flaxseed for protein (Costco), and some probiotics (pureed up kombucha scobys). She soaks a new batch of grains in some water and raw apple cider vinegar (Azure) and puts aside for tomorrow. I nurse baby and take a quick moment to check in with my emails and my website orders. There were some orders for my How To Balance Hormones Naturally webinar so I get them registered to view the webinar. Then I sweep the kitchen and dining room and collect all the stray Legos from odd places underneath furniture.

7:00 p.m. Everyone gets their fermented cod liver oil, herbal multivitamin, and vitamin C. I tell the little boys to get their teeth brushed and their pajamas on. The little boys roll out their beds (See my post here for how we work our sleeping arrangements in our little house.) and have their reading time.

When hubby is out of town for work, Squish and I read with them. When hubby is home, he reads with them and I get some work done on the computer. Tonight hubby is home and Squish decided to take a late nap (gonna be another late one tonight!) so I looked over some lab test results for two clients and started jotting down some things they need to do with nutritional supplements based on those results.

Here’s a picture of my daughter with one of the goats, our livestock guardian dog Gracie, and Peach the chicken.

The older kids head out to the barn to do the milking, but all of our goats are dried up right now so “milking time” just includes giving the ones who need grains their grains. Tonight they also check our Heppy girl for signs of labor. She has been showing signs and her previous owners were not sure of her breeding date so we want to make sure we know when she is going to go into labor, especially with the temperatures as low as they have been. We don’t want any frozen babies! They come in from the barn and report that there are no changes, so we continue to wait and pray!

8:30 p.m. Older kids get ready for bed and have their own reading/writing time. My daughter is writing a series of puppy chapter books so she finishes writing chapter 7 of her book. Squish wakes up ready to party. Daddy does diaper change and some p.j.’s on Squish while I finally get a shower. (I don’t get a shower every day so when I do, I take my time!) When I get out of the shower, I make sure there are lots of leftovers and snacks in the fridge for hubby to take out of town tomorrow for work. We have leftover Broccoli Bites, some hard-boiled eggs, a jar of spicy homemade fermented sauerkraut, and some leftover quinoa chicken chili as well as some leftovers from dinner tonight. The pantry also has some homemade granola still so he can take that and a half gallon of milk.

9:00 p.m. Kids are all in bed (except Squish) so hubby and I make some popcorn (we get bulk organic multi-colored popcorn from Azure that we air pop and put lots of Kerrygold butter, Himalayan salt, and nutritional yeast flakes on top) and sneak away downstairs (with Squish) to relax and hang out. Sometimes we just talk and sometimes we laugh together with a sitcom on Netflix. (We don’t have broadcast television so we can only watch DVD’s, Netflix, and Amazon Prime instant video.) Tonight we decide on comedy so we watch an old episode of Last Man Standing. (The one on vaccines. It’s a great episode!) It’s cold in the basement but my hubby bought me an electric blanket for Christmas so we all snuggle up with that, our popcorn, a bottle of kombucha, and relax.

10:00 p.m. Hubby fell asleep on the couch and Squish is still wide awake. I wake up hubby and encourage him to go get some sleep in our bed since he has to wake up early tomorrow. He feels bad because he knows I’ll have to be up for a while with the baby but I remind him that I can sleep in and he can’t, so urge him to go to bed. He relents with a kiss goodnight.

I bring my laptop downstairs and get some more work done while Squish finishes munching on popcorn and playing with toys. He gets fussy so I turn on VeggieTales (he really likes The League of Incredible Vegetables) while I finish packaging my Store orders.  So many things keep selling out so I fill the orders I can and shoot a quick email to the supplement company to order more. Then I make a mental note to render more tallow for the Tallow Balm.

Squish does this “hand tuck” when he nurses. I think he just wants to make sure he’s secure and that I’m not going anywhere.

11:30 p.m. Squish nurses to sleep while I read a chapter in “Sacred Parenting” by Gary Thomas. I lay him down in our bedroom with hubby snoring away; brush my teeth, take some vitamins, lock up the house, unplug the wireless modem, make sure the dishwasher got ran (it didn’t), and take the 4-year old’s sleeping heavy body to the bathroom to go potty so he doesn’t wet the bed. He’s already a tiny bit wet so I scramble downstairs to get some clean underwear for him. Get him back to bed, tuck him in again, and snuggle up between my hubby and Squish. Squish will probably be awake in 4-5 hours or so for some of mama’s milk and cuddles so I fall asleep as soon as I can! But before I do, I remember three things that I forgot so I get up, jot them down, and go back to bed. As I’m falling asleep, I ask God to help me get this baby on a different schedule…

Thanks for joining me in a Day In My Life. I know this may be very different from many peoples’ lives and I don’t want to discount how anyone else lives. Just wanted to share what a random day looks like for me, my family, and the many blessings and responsibilities God has given me to answer the question, “How do you do it??” I hope this will be a blessing and not bring about any judgment for the way we have chosen to live. Our family is not perfect; we definitely have moments, trials, and a big need for grace; but I am so in love with what God has done for us and how He has constantly guided us towards His purpose for our lives! I pray that He does the same for you and your family!

Blessings of good health,

Placenta Encapsulation: 4 Things You May Not Have Considered

$

Very often, my prenatal clients ask about my position regarding placenta encapsulation. The midwife I work for offers this service to clients who wish to take advantage of the purported benefits of consuming their placenta postpartum, a practice technically called placentophagy.

The first consideration I had, as well as many others have, with placenta encapsulation is whether the Bible offers us any advice on this topic. For that, I will simply refer to this article by Visionary Womanhood: http://visionarywomanhood.com/eating-the-placenta-a-christian-worldview-perspective/

My desire in this post is not to discuss this topic Biblically, but to offer 4 nutritional/health considerations along the topic of placentophagy that many women or their health professionals do not know. There are numerous articles discussing the benefits but not many that consider these things:

1. Hormones during pregnancy

My first concern about placentophagy is that our hormones are dramatically different during pregnancy than during lactation. The placenta becomes a part of the endocrine system. In the second trimester, it takes over production of hormones needed to sustain pregnancy. These are hormones that are necessary for pregnancy, but upon delivery, a woman’s hormones are designed to change dramatically in order to initiate/sustain lactation and bonding with the baby. This is where the ovaries will once again take on their job of producing the right endocrine hormones.

Childbirth causes a drastic change in (and flushing of) hormones to switch the body from pregnancy to lactation. There are various articles listing the may hormones present in the placenta that are claimed to be a good thing for postpartum mothers. However, I feel that the placenta has the potential to be filled with pregnancy hormones that may not necessarily be ideal during lactation.

I think that some mamas who experience positive benefits from consuming their placenta postpartum may in part be due to the high amounts of progesterone in the placenta that the placenta began producing in the 2nd trimester. This indicates the likelihood of hormone imbalance in mama that stands to cause many problems down the road if that imbalance is not addressed long-term. Out of all of my female clients, I would estimate that 90% of them (or more) struggle with hormone imbalance. Low progesterone is extremely common in women today. While the progesterone hormones from the placenta may temporarily help remedy this imbalance for mom, it is of course ideal to address it naturally and nutritionally for the long-term health of mom as well as baby. For more information, check out my webinar on Balancing Hormones Naturally.

Because I practice ecological breastfeeding, I was concerned that the hormones in the placenta had the potential to interfere with the normal hormones that keep menstruation away for me for two years. (You can read more about ecological breastfeeding here.) Unfortunately, there is not a lot of evidence to show whether or not the placental hormones could interfere with normal breastfeeding amenorrhea so it is something we must consider.

Overall, it’s difficult to say without more concrete research whether the hormones in this endocrine organ will affect each mother beneficially or negatively. There is likely no one-size-fits-all in this regard.

2. Placenta Microbiome

There is new evidence that the placenta itself has microbiome. If the placental microflora is not wrought with beneficial bacteria (as I am seeing more and more with clients), then it stands to reason that it could also contain bad bacteria if mama did not work on getting good flora during pregnancy, if mama had antibiotics during pregnancy/labor or even before pregnancy, or if mama was positive for Group B strep or Bacterial Vaginosis. Research that discovered the placenta microbiome also found this:

Women who had suffered a bacterial infection (such as a bladder infection) during the first or second trimester had “microbial fingerprints” of this infection in their placenta.1

We are also learning from new research that not all breastmilk is created equally, and this pertains to probiotics as well. Mothers who have good microflora will pass on those probiotics to baby through her breastmilk. (http://biomarkersandmilk.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/human-milk-has-microbiome-and-bacteria.html )

This is where my concern with placentophagy is in a woman who may not have had beneficial microflora in her placenta and could potential pass on pathogenic (bad) bacteria to her baby as a result of consuming a placenta wrought with bad bacteria.

3. Calcification

More and more practitioners are seeing deterioration of the placenta towards the end of pregnancy as a result of calcification. While some in the medical community mistakenly report this as a problem caused by too much calcium, this is actually a problem related to poor diet and mineral deficiencies. Consuming things like caffeine, soda, and acidic processed foods causes calcium to leech out of our bones and teeth in an effort to balance the acidity of these things so they do not immediately harm the body. Additionally, caffeine causes our body to excrete calcium before the body can use it.

This is the more accurate mechanism behind calcification of the placenta as well as kidney stones and other problems related to calcium.

Because of this, one must consider the reduced health benefits, and possibly the negative effects, of consuming a placenta that may have begun to calcify. The calcification itself is indicative of a deficiency of various nutrients.

4. Heavy Metals

Did you know that around 30% of all placentas contain mercury and 35% contain lead? 2

Research has shown that placentas seem to accumulate some toxic heavy metals including mercury, cadmium, and lead. This should be a very important consideration for new moms who are breastfeeding, as these heavy metals have the possibility to continue affecting baby’s neurological health, as well as other areas of health, by being passed to the brain through breastmilk.

Here’s some more information on lead and mercury exposure in babies:

Lead has often been called the leading environmental health threat to children. It is toxic to the developing brain, and at high levels results in numerous poisoning symptoms. In addition, at the low doses common today in many countries, lead has subtle effects on neurological functions, including learning, memory and attention span. Because the infant brain is developing rapidly both before birth and for several years after birth, lead exposures during this critical period are particularly detrimental to the future intellectual potential of children.

…mercury, like lead, is toxic to the developing brain. While high-dose exposures can result in a cerebral palsy-like syndrome, low dose exposures may cause subtle deficits in learning and memory. 3

Of course we must consider increased risk factors for mercury, lead, and other toxic metal contamination in mothers who receive vaccinations containing mercury, have amalgam fillings, have exposure to lead, consume foods containing high-fructose corn syrup (a source of mercury), etc.

Additionally, there is evidence that mothers who are deficient in calcium (which is basically most moms who consume caffeine and/or soda) are at a higher risk of passing lead toxicity onto their baby:

Much of the lead in breast milk does not come from the mothers’ exposure during lactation. Instead, it comes from lead stored in the mothers’ bones. Because lead mimics the beneficial mineral calcium, it is stored for decades along with calcium in the bones. During pregnancy and lactation, a woman’s body extracts calcium from her own bones to provide calcium for her child’s bone development. Calcium extraction from bone is greatest during lactation, and as a result, lead stored in the mother’s bones also enters the blood and breast milk during pregnancy and lactation. 3

I would assume the same to be even more likely in mothers who consume a placenta with measurable levels of lead.

In Summary

There are nutritional considerations and possible negative health effects of consuming one’s placenta.

However, none of this information is provided in an attempt to promote the idea that placenta encapsulation for postpartum consumption is inherently wrong. It is simply my intention to share some health considerations that many people may not think of when deciding if placentophagy is right for them. For some, they may feel the benefits far outweigh any perceived or real risks.

Either way, I would encourage ALL women to work with someone like myself or another naturally-minded health practitioner to focus on having a healthy, nutrient-dense pregnancy and addressing any risk factors that may be present in one’s health history for the benefit of mom and baby. I encourage all women to individually and prayerfully consider the question of whether they are to consume their placenta or not. It is a very unique and personal decision and what’s right for one woman may not be right for another!

Blessings of a beautiful, healthy pregnancy!

Combating Childhood Diseases Naturally (& Without Vaccines)

$

0
After researching the lengthy, documented adverse effects of vaccines (some of which can be seen in my post about vaccination), many parents decide the purported benefits of vaccines are not worth the risks. Many have children with lifelong health problems as a result of side effects.

Whatever the reason, many parents want to know how to protect their children from everyday illnesses as well as childhood diseases. In this post, I’m going to share how to do exactly that.

This isn’t ignoring modern medical advancement; this is using the God-given non-toxic ones!

For everything, the most important things of course are diet/nutrition, sanitation, and living conditions. In fact, these are the things that Columbia and Harvard researchers found to be the main contributing factor for the reduction in childhood diseases, not vaccines.

Citing renowned physician McKeown’s work, Columbia University reports that there were other factors that were much more responsible for the decline in diseases than vaccinations:

The main influences on the decline in mortality were improved nutrition. . . reduced exposure (from better hygiene). . . and, less certainly, immunization and therapy on the large number of conditions included in the miscellaneous group. Since these three classes were responsible respectively for nearly half, one-sixth, and one-tenth of the fall in the death rate, it is probably that the advancement in nutrition was the major influence.” (http://www.columbia.edu/itc/hs/pubhealth/rosner/g8965/client_edit/readings/week_2/mckinlay.pdf)

So let’s work on nutrition!

The main factor for reducing a child’s vulnerability to pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and diseases is avoiding refined sugars and foods containing them. Most people think of sugary foods like sodas, candy, and desserts but nowadays, even salad dressings and dried fruit contain added, refined sugar. Research from the American Heart Association found that the average toddler consumes around 12 teaspoons, or 48 grams, of added refined sugar per day. Children ages 4-8 average out at 21 teaspoons, or 84 grams, of added refined sugar per day. “Health” foods like sweetened yogurts, granola bars, and breakfast cereals maintain a large portion of that intake.

The problem is that consumption of refined sugar shuts down the immune system for up to five hours after consumption. Dr. Sherri Tenpenny reports:

It has been documented that refined white sugar can suppress the immune system. In a study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition as far back as 1977 reported the adverse that sugar has on the immune system. Blood was drawn from subjects and the activity of the white blood cells that neutralize viruses and bacteria was observed and calculated. The white blood cell activity was calculated before and after subjects were given various doses of sugar: 6, 12, 18 and 24 teaspoons, respectively. Each subsequently higher dose of sugar created a corresponding decrease in the activities of the subject’s white blood cells. The group that had consumed the largest amount of sugar had essentially no functioning white blood cells within an hour after consuming the sugar. The immunosuppression occurred for up to two hours after consuming that sugar, but the adverse effects of no blood cell activity persisted in some instances for up to five hours. REF: Am J Clin Nut 1977;30:613 “Depression of lymphocyte transformation following oral glucose ingestion.”

Why is this important? White blood cells eliminate viruses and bacteria that invade our defenses. Without the efforts of these cells, susceptibility to infection is increased and recovering from infection can be stalled. Therefore, do not offer children with fevers Coca-Cola, 7-Up, or Ginger Ale for an upset tummy and ice cream to soothe a sore throat. Unaware, these hefty doses of sugar can further drag down the immune system at a time when it needs to be at its strongest.

If a child is given a sugary breakfast cereal, goes to school and has chocolate milk with other sugar-filled junk food, is exposed to someone at school with an illness, comes home and gets sugary cookies or other junk-food snack, they will essentially have no functioning white blood cells to protect them from the illness they were exposed to that day!

Additionally, refined sugar damages beneficial gut flora which is where at least 70% of the immune system resides.

So eliminating foods containing refined sugars is the first and most important way to protect your child from illness!

This includes anything containing “sugar,” “brown sugar,” “powdered sugar,” “sucrose,” “fructose,” “high-fructose corn syrup,” “corn syrup,” “evaporated cane juice,” “organic sugar,” raw sugar,” etc.
Additional dietary measures to help a child have the best possible immune system include avoiding the following food ingredients:

  • Vegetable oils (corn, canola, soybean), especially hydrogenated;
  • White breads (“enriched wheat”), white pasta, and other refined flours;
  • Pasteurized dairy (read my article Milk: Harmful or Helpful here.)
  • Frozen and canned meals
  • Puffed cereals, puffed chips, rice cakes, etc.
  • Meat from animals treated with growth hormones, antibiotics, and fed GMO foods
  • “Low-fat” or “sugar-free” food products
  • Gluten (Read my gluten eBook for more info here.)
Foods to eat more of include:
  • Meat, eggs, and raw dairy from grass-fed animals (Read my post Milk: Helpful or Harmful)
  • LOTS of organic vegetables, especially dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, Swiss chard, beet greens, etc.
  • Homemade bone broth (not store-bought broth/stock)
  • Probiotic-rich foods like kefir, kombucha/yogurt (unsweetened and made from whole milk), lacto-fermented pickles, lacto-fermented sauerkraut, etc.

Breastfeeding

I cannot stress enough the importance of breastfeeding our children to protect them from everyday illnesses as well as common childhood diseases. Research over the past 50 years has only confirmed that breastmilk is what we sometimes call “God’s natural vaccine.”

Before the introduction of pharmaceutical vaccines, babies were given natural immunity to common childhood diseases like measles, as well as protection from things like polio, both transplacentally and via breastmilk. This is how infants, who would otherwise be very vulnerable, were protected.

Now, because most women of childbearing age in America are vaccinated, they do not have lifelong immunity from naturally-acquiring wild strains of these illnesses, so they cannot pass on that immunity to their babies. Fortunately, breastmilk still offers Immunogloblin and other protective properties to keep babies protected.

For instance, research shows:

Human milk protects against infections in the breastfed offspring mainly via the secretory IgA antibodies, but also most likely via several other factors like the bactericidal lactoferrin. It is striking that the defense factors of human milk function without causing inflammation, some components are even directly anti-inflammatory. Protection against infections has been well evidenced during lactation against, e.g., acute and prolonged diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, otitis media, urinary tract infection, neonatal septicemia, and necrotizing enterocolitis. There is also interesting evidence for an enhanced protection remaining for years after lactation against diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, otitis media, Haemophilus influenzae type b infections, and wheezing illness. In several instances the protection seems to improve with the duration of breastfeeding.

Coincidentally, research like this discovered that breastmilk would lower the efficacy of vaccines because breastmilk is so effective against diseases. Unfortunately, rather than using this information to widely promote the disease-protecting properties of breastmilk, the CDC advised women to delay/temporarily halt breastfeeding while infants undergo vaccinations.

Some more examples:

Did you know that Albert Sabin, inventor of the oral polio vaccine, did the first study on the anti-polio properties of breast milk? He infected mice with polio and then took breast milk from 71 American women and fed it to the mice. The breast milk had an 84% success rate at neutralising polio. (Albert Sabin and Howard Fieldsteel, ‘Anti-poliomyelitic Activity of Human and Bovine Colostrum and Milk’, Journal of Pediatrics, 29 (1962).

According to the journal of epidemiology, breast milk protects against HIB for up to 10 years after you have stopped breast feeding. ’For each week of breast feeding, the protection improved.’ (Journal of Epidemiology, 1997, 26: 443-450).

Tropical Pediatrics also found significant amounts of antibodies in breast milk to whooping cough, HIB, strep B infection and meningitis. ’Samples may indicate a protective role for breast milk against the four infections of early childhood.’ Tropical Pediatrics, 1989, 4: 226-232.

Fatality from measles in third world children was REDUCED BY ONE THIRD in breast fed children.  Lepage P. Munyakazi C, Hennart P. Breast feeding and hospital mortality in children from Rwanda. Lancet 1981;i:40911.

In a study in Brazil, dehydrating diarrhoea (defined by the presence of a persistent skinfold plus at least two other signs of dehydration) was 6.0 times more frequent among non-breastfed infants than among exclusively breastfed infants. If a child already had diarrhoea, the risk of developing dehydration was 3.3 times greater for the nonbreastfed infant.
Fuchs SC. Risk factors for dehydrating diarrhea: a case-control study. Ph.D. thesis, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, 1993. Victora CG, Fuchs SC, Kirkwood BR, Lombardi C, Barros FC. Breastfeeding, nutritional status and other prognostic factors for dehydration among young children with diarrhoea: a casecontrol study. Bull WHO 1992;70:467-75.

Now can you see why breastmilk is often referred to as “God’s vaccines?”

It is true unfortunately that some women are not able to breastfeed. As a holistic health practitioner, I work with women to optimize their health before and during pregnancy in order to ensure that more women are able to breastfeed. There are many reasons women are not able to breastfeed, and many of them can be eliminated if addressed preventatively. For more information, read my post here: Inadequate Breastmilk Supply: Causes & Solutions.

Sanitation/Living Environment:

We are fortunate to live in an age where we have indoor plumping, running water, and designated place for sewer. There are a few additional things in the area of sanitation that parents can avoid to further promote good health for their children:

  • Avoid using chlorine/bleach to sanitize the home. This has the potential to cause more harm than good. Use vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and other safe, natural products instead. Also avoid using antibacterial soaps and other products containing triclosan.
  • Consider homeschooling. Outbreaks always happen in areas where there is a large ratio of people to space, such as classrooms/schools, inner cities, tourist attractions, etc. When there is a condensed group of people in a small space, especially in schools, there is a high probability of Vaccine Shedding happening as well. Of course, homeschooling is not an option for everyone but it is usually an option for more people than realized. The goal of course is not to shelter our children from every single illness but to avoid areas most prone to outbreaks.

Nutritional Supplements

Regardless of the particular illness, these are the supplements I would recommend for those wanting to keep their children’s immune systems at their best:

  • Probiotics. At least 70% of the immune system is in the gut so supporting good gastrointestinal health is paramount to everything else. Probiotics can be in the form of a supplement such as HFFG’s Probiotics or from homemade probiotic-rich foods like delicious kombucha, kefir, lacto-fermented vegetables, etc. These should be taken/consumed at least once/daily.

These are daily, preventative supplements. Below I will detail some further particular nutritional supplement recommendations for particular illnesses.

Whooping Cough/Pertussis

I have known countless people, including those vaccinated and unvaccinated, who have acquired pertussis and effectively used high-dose vitamin C treatment. It is my first and main recommendation for whooping cough. For more information on it, you can read Dr. Suzanne Humphries article about it here.

I recommend starting with Dr. Klenner’s dosage chart here and working to achieve bowel tolerance. Bowel tolerance titration is necessary with whooping cough as any less may not fully relieve symptoms.

Measles

VITAMIN A FOR MEASLES:
One can quickly (and quite easily) find a wealth of documented research links proving vitamin A deficiency to be a contributing factor to measles outbreaks. There are research studies, like this one, showing that vitamin A reduces complications from measles:
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/91/5/1014Other studies show that vitamin A treatment is VERY effective for treating measles: http://ije.oxfordjournals.org/content/39/suppl_1/i48.fullThis is no secret, friends. The World Health Organization has it listed right on their website that measles is more prominent in areas where the population is deficient in Vitamin A and that they recommend treating measles with vitamin A:

All children in developing countries diagnosed with measles should receive two doses of vitamin A supplements, given 24 hours apart. This treatment restores low vitamin A levels during measles that occur even in well-nourished children and can help prevent eye damage and blindness. Vitamin A supplements have been shown to reduce the number of deaths from measles by 50%.
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs286/en/

So what can we do? Give our children a daily dose of cod liver oil! Regular fish oil does NOT contain vitamin A, so it has to be cod liver oil. Here’s the brand my family takes and how it’s different from others: http://healthyfamiliesforgod.com/2012/05/fermented-cod-liver-oil-whats-all-the-hype-and-is-it-really-nasty/Keep in mind that beta-carotene and other carotenoids from plants is NOT the same as Vitamin A. The body MUST convert those into Vitamin A and most people’s livers nowadays are too overloaded with toxins to make that conversion so skip right to the animal-based Vitamin A!
Dosage recommendations for daily maintenance dosing can be found here: http://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/cod-liver-oil-basics-and-recommendations/

It’s hard to know for sure what specific dosage recommendations would be for children with measles as vitamin A supplements used in research were from various sources, some synthetic vitamin A but even with synthetic vitamin A, which we know carries a much higher risk of toxicity in high doses, patients are given 100,000 iu’s daily in children over six months of age for a couple of days. Additional research states:

The recommended regimen is 100 000 IU by mouth at the time of diagnosis for infants younger than 12 months of age, and 200 000 IU for older children. In the presence of ophthalmologic signs of vitamin A deficiency, such as night blindness, Bitot’s spots (grayish white deposits on the bulbar conjunctiva adjacent to the cornea) or xerophthalmia, the WHO recommends the dose be repeated in 24 hours and again 4 weeks later. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/91/5/1014

You can also read a case study of a 10-month old baby being successfully treating using intravenous Vitamin C for measles here: http://www.injectablevitaminc.com/images/Ch10.pdf

Polio

Ah, the hot button of all vaccine debates–the fearful polio virus that can cause paralysis. What most people don’t know is that in the 1940′s during a polio epidemic in North Carolina, Dr. Klenner treated polio successfully with large doses of vitamin C, usually given intravenously every 2-4 hours similar to the way antibiotics was given. All the patients presenting with polio were cured within a period of 72 hours and not a single patient was left with paralysis.

And even after symptoms of paralysis set in for one patient, the vitamin C therapy still worked:

In 1951, “In an especially incredible case,” Levy says, “Klenner (9) described a five-year-old girl stricken with polio. This child had already been paralyzed in both her lower legs for over four days! The right leg was completely limp, and the left leg was determined to be 85% flaccid. Pain was noticed especially in the knee and lumbar areas. Four consulting physicians confirmed the diagnosis of polio. Other than massage, vitamin C was the only therapy initiated. After four days of vitamin C injections the child was again moving both legs, but with only very slow and deliberate movement. Klenner also noted that there was a “definite response” after only the first injection of vitamin C. The child was discharged from the hospital after four days, and 1,000 mg of oral vitamin C was continued every two hours with fruit juice for seven days. The child was walking about, although slowly, on the 11th day of treatment. By the 19th day of treatment there was a “complete return of sensory and motor function,” and no long-term impairment ever resulted. Vitamin C not only completely cured this case of polio, it completely reversed what would undoubtedly have been a devastating, crippling result for the remainder of this girl’s life.” (4) For such elegant results, in the days before widespread use of either antibiotics or vaccination, one may wonder why Klenner was not awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

http://www.doctoryourself.com/klennerbio.html

Today, polio is still alive and well but is disguised under other medical terms, including Transverse Myelitis, viral or “aseptic” meningitis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)- (what Franklin Delano Roosevelt had), Chinese Paralytic syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, epidemic cholera, cholera morbus, spinal meningitis, spinal apoplexy, inhibitory palsy, intermittent fever, famine fever, worm fever, bilious remittent fever, ergotism, post-polio syndrome, acute flaccid paralysis(AFP). – http://www.vaccinationcouncil.org/2011/11/17/smoke-mirrors-and-the-disappearance-of-polio/#sthash.57WvzWXo.dpuf

and most recently, enterovirus. As I write this, news headlines cite over a hundred cases recently from the enterovirus, a “mysterious polio-like illness” that presents with the very same symptoms of polio. Unfortunately, because doctors today are not employing orthomolecular treatment using vitamin C intravenously, many of these children are left with paralysis. This is such a shame.

Vitamin C therapy is not a profitable treatment for doctors so it is no longer employed in most cases, despite the fact that it was widely used many decades ago before the introduction of the multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies.

Parents would do well to learn to use Dr. Klenner’s vitamin C dosage chart for many illnesses, as well as to locate a local “drip room” where vitamin C can be given intravenously, or requested your child’s care provider to offer this service.

My recommendation for Vitamin C products to use high-dose oral treatment of vitamin C is:

NutriBiotic’s Non-GMO sodium ascorbate (see referral code below for discount)

 Chickenpox

Dr. Klenner and other orthomolecular doctors again employed the use of high-dose vitamin C therapy in the case of chickenpox and found the following:

Chickenpox gave equally good response, the vesicles responding in the same manner as did those of herpes. These vesicles were crusted after the first 24 hours, and the patient well in three to four days.

http://nutri.com/49/

I would also utilize the immune-boosting properties of vitamin A in the case of chickenpox as well, offering fermented cod liver oil as indicated above for measles.

And now that the chickenpox vaccine has led to an epidemic of shingles, Dr. Mercola recommends that raw honey, preferably Manuka but any raw honey one can obtain, is beneficial for shingles because it contains strong antibacterial activity, it draws fluid away from the wound, and its sugar content inhibits the formation of harmful microorganisms.

Vitamin C and Vitamin A as indicated above, as well as avoiding foods containing refined sugar to strengthen the immune system, are important as well.

Mumps

Orthomolecular treatment using vitamin C also found to be beneficial for mumps:

Of mumps, 33 cases were treated with ascorbic acid. When vitamin C was given at the peak of the infection the fever was gone within 24 hours, the pain within 36 hours, the swelling in 48 to 72 hours.

Pneumonia & Bronchitis

For 50 years, we have had documented research of the success using vitamin C in high doses for pneumonia and bronchitis. That research can be found here:  http://injectablevitaminc.com/images/Ch20.pdf

If intravenous vitamin C is not available, oral doses using Dr. Klenner’s chart should be utilized.

Keep in mind for all of these:

The amount of vitamin C for optimum effect will vary greatly with the individual. The type of the disease and the degree of toxemia (or viremia) are important guides in determining the dosage.  http://www.injectablevitaminc.com/images/Ch10.pdf

Illnesses and stress quickly deplete the body of Vitamin C so the level of each of those will further affect the individual’s needs for vitamin C.

Influenza

Prevention is quite helpful in all illnesses, especially the flu. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the flu in many research studies, such as this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2870528/and this: http://www.jsonline.com/news/health/44680902.html

Dr. Sherri Tenpenny offers the following vitamin D dosage recommendations:

However, the best way to determine dosage is by assessing one’s serum D level. Most babies today are born to mothers who are already Vitamin D deficient, leaving baby to be born with a deficiency and susceptible to influenza and other viral illnesses. Consequently, optimizing mom’s Vitamin D levels during pregnancy and providing baby with an oral vitamin D supplement (a liquid D3 without soybean oil like this one: http://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-infanthealth-liquid-vitamin-d-drops-for-kids-baby-ds-400-iu-1-fl-oz-30-ml-900-servings-5 ) is preferable in order to help prevent frequent sicknesses in infants.

Fertility Awareness & Natural Birth Control

by Ashley Charpentier

For those who want to live naturally, birth control is a very touchy subject. There are many people who avoid toxins and chemicals in every area of their life, yet many are slow to give up conventional methods of birth control. Hormonal birth control and IUDs severely disrupt the way that God created our bodies to work. These forms of birth control can lead to serious complications. For more information, check out HFFG’s article on The Dark Side of Birth Control.

I have spent many hours researching methods of birth control wanting to do what is best for my husband and me. While we want kids, we do not want to have them until my husband’s military contract is up so he will be there to raise our kids. This being said, I also wanted to ensure that I am not disrupting the natural balance and processes that God crafted.

There are several methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP) that allow us to avoid/achieve pregnancy without toying with the way our bodies work.

Fertility Awareness

Once I read and learned about Fertility Awareness, I became unsure of why it’s not more commonly used. The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) is a method used to avoid or achieve pregnancy based on a woman’s fertility signs. If a woman knows when she is fertile and about to ovulate, she can avoid having sex on those days or use barrier methods of birth control if trying to avoid pregnancy, or use those days to try and conceive if trying to achieve pregnancy.

Late in elementary school when all the girls get together and have “the talk,” we were taught about our cycle. However, it seemed then that the biggest question of our cycle was to use tampons or pads, as menstruation seemed to be the focus, not ovulation. What we weren’t taught is how our bodies give many signs around ovulation and how to recognize those signs. It is vital that we learn to recognize the signs, as they tell us many things about our body (beyond just the time of ovulation) and we are able to gain a much greater understanding of our bodies.

Why Use FAM?

  1. Fertility awareness is completely natural and eliminates the need for using hormones and other methods of birth control.

  2. FAM allows us to become more “in-tune” with our bodies and allows us to greater understand the way our bodies work.

  3. This method takes no more than a couple minutes each morning and easily becomes a habit.

FAM generally encompasses two methods: calendar based and symptoms based.

Calendar based is not a very accurate method due to variation in a woman’s cycle. The belief that a woman’s cycle is 28 days long and ovulation occurs on day 14 is simply a myth. It is normal for a woman’s cycle to range anywhere from 24 to 36 days and ovulation does not always occur at day 14. Also, each woman’s “normal” easily varies. A woman may often have 26 day cycles, but it is likely that in any given month her cycle may be a few days longer. These reasons are why the calendar method should not be relied on and why one should learn to recognize the symptoms of fertility.

Symptom Based Fertility Awareness

Symptom based fertility awareness is the most common and most effective form of truly natural birth control.

A woman’s body gives three main signs when she is about to ovulate:

  1. Basal body temperature: A woman’s body temperature can help indicate ovulation. Prior to ovulation, a woman’s basal (or waking) body temperature is lower due to heightened estrogen levels. Once ovulation occurs, progesterone is released by the corpus luteum which heightens body temperature. To measure BBT, one should take their body temperature immediately upon waking, as body temperature begins to rise once we wake up. BBT cannot be solely relied upon because the increase in body temperature does not occur until the day after ovulation has already occurred.

  2. Cervical mucus (also referred to as cervical fluid): Our bodies create cervical fluid, as cervical fluid allows sperm to survive longer and more easily, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. Tracking changes in cervical mucus is a very accurate way to determine when ovulation is approaching and when ovulation occurs. As a woman approaches ovulation, cervical fluid becomes much more prevalent. In the days leading up to ovulation, cervical fluid is often a white/cream color and becomes more moist and “stretchy” (where it would stretch between one’s fingers without breaking as easily). The closer to ovulation, the more opaque and stretchy it gets. Cervical fluid the day of ovulation is often compared to egg whites in appearance and consistency. The last day of this type of cervical fluid is referred to as a woman’s “peak day” and is likely the day of ovulation. The day after ovulation, a woman will experience little to no cervical mucus.

  3. Cervical position: Not all women track cervical position, as cervical mucus is the most important to track, but it is a telling sign that takes very little time to note. Typically, the cervix is low in position and firm (often said to feel like the tip of your nose). In the days leading up to ovulation, the cervix becomes higher, softer, and more open. The day of ovulation is when it is highest, softest, and most open. Around the time of ovulation, the cervix will feel more like your lips than it does your nose.

Our bodies are amazing creations and give us many signs leading up to ovulation if we are willing to listen to our bodies and learn to identify the signs. The three main signs are observed and charted, making it easy to interpret on paper. Many women notice other symptoms that indicate the approach of ovulation. Some of these other signs may include: breast tenderness, mid-cycle spotting, increased sex drive, side cramping or pain (called mittelschmerz) on the side which the egg breaks through the follicle, and bloating. There are other symptoms that some women may observe approaching/during ovulation once they learn to listen to their bodies.

It is best to use at least two, if not all three, of the main fertility signs to best understand your cycle, especially to accurately avoid or achieve pregnancy.

While a woman ovulates only one day each cycle, sperm are able to survive in a woman’s body for up to five days, especially when she has fertile cervical fluid prior to ovulation. This being said, the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation is when a couple has a decision to make. Some refrain from sex for those six days each cycle; others turn to barrier methods.

For more in depth information to learn about NFP and FAM, I have found the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler to be an amazing source for anyone who wants to begin using fertility awareness.

Safe barrier methods

The best way to use barrier methods is in accordance with FAM. When used with fertility awareness, barrier methods are only required for a six day window each cycle.

  • Cervical cap: The cervical cap is a silicone cup that fits over a woman’s cervix to prevent sperm from travelling to the egg. Cervical caps are supposed to be used with a spermicidal cream to help stop the sperm from moving.
  • Diaphragm: The diaphragm is a dome shaped ring or cup inserted deep into the vagina. It functions very similar to the cervical cap, in that is blocks sperm from moving into the uterus. These are also to be used will spermicidal gel/cream.
  • Condoms: There are male and female condoms, male being most common (and much more affordable. However, many condoms have chemical lubricants or spermicides on them, but even still, the exposure is minimal and much safer than hormonal birth control. There are also a fair amount of condoms sold that are non-toxic (some brands that I have found are Sir Richards, Crown, Glyde, as well as lambskin condoms).
 Notes on barrier methods:
  • Most spermicides sold in the US contain nonoxynol-9, a harsh and highly toxic chemical. There are alternatives however that do not contain harsh chemicals.
  • Cervical caps bought in the US require a prescription and fitting from a doctor.
In all the research I have done, the following website is my favorite for the most natural barrier methods. They ship from the UK, and sell Contragel, a natural, nontoxic spermicide, cervical caps that don’t require a prescription or fitting, as well as natural condoms and lubricants.

Ecological Breastfeeding

Ecological breastfeeding is one method of NFP used to naturally space children apart. It is healthy to space children apart for the health of mom and baby, since many women may experience nutrient deficiencies following birth (read HFFG’s article on Maternal Depletion for more information). There are many benefits to ecological breastfeeding for many women. For more information, and to see if it’s right for you, check out Ecological Breastfeeding- What It Is & Why It Doesn’t Always Work.

Be sure to also check out HFFG’s Balancing Hormones Naturally Webinar for extensive information on why cycles can be irregular and how to balance hormones naturally.

There are many methods and ways to naturally prevent or achieve pregnancy that work perfectly with the way God created our bodies to work. Our bodies are truly amazing creations and God created them as He did for a reason. Amazing things happen when we begin to get in tune with our bodies. And as with anything in life, the best way to plan our families is trusting in God and His plan and doing so in submission and prayer to Him.

~Ashley Charpentier

My name is Ashley, and I’m 19 years old. My wonderful husband and I are from Minnesota but currently living in California. I have always been pretty involved in politics and often was learning about our corrupt system, which is when I came across Monsanto. My dad had told me that he had read a study about GMOs, that are in most of American food, were tested by French scientists leading to them being banned in the country due to the affects they have on the body. This is what got me questioning and researching more about where food comes from. Ever since, I have worked towards having the most natural life I can. Currently we live in San Diego, but our dream is to get a nice plot of land on which we can build our own little house where we can raise our kids in a natural, simple lifestyle. Until then, my husband’s years left in the Navy have us travelling, growing our relationship with each other and with God, and living as naturally as we are able in the city. I continue to learn more each day about the amazing tools God gave us in nature, and intend to get my certification as a Nutrition Consultant after which I will continue my education in holistic health. God bless!

Nutritional Protection & Detox Protocol From Vaccine Toxicity

$

The following is a standard protocol of natural food supplements that are used to rid the body of excess heavy metals such as mercury, lead, aluminum, and arsenic; eliminate other toxins and byproducts of vaccines; and restore/protect the intestinal wall and other parts of the body from vaccine-induced damage.  This protocol is adapted from information compiled from resources such as Dr. Mercola, Dr. Klinghardt, and Dr. Russell Blaylock.

This protocol can be used to detox from vaccinations even years afterwards if the heavy metals are still accumulated in the body. A hair mineral analysis done by a local wellness chiropractor or naturopath is a good tool to determine if the body has accumulated levels of these toxins.

This protocol can also be used for those in the military, the healthcare field, or other situations where certain vaccinations are required/forced.

It can also be used as an integral part of healing a child from vaccine-induced damage and protecting children proactively from upcoming vaccinations.

For those who are going to be given a vaccination, begin this protocol a week before the scheduled inoculation and continue for at least two weeks afterwards.

For those suffering from toxicity as a result of other factors such as amalgam fillings, prescription medications, workplace exposure to chemicals, farm/lawn chemicals, etc., this protocol can also be used.

Because these supplements are food, they are not medicine and do not carry the same overdose dangers as man-made drugs.

Take all of these supplements (it will not work if you take only one or two of them) each day for a period of at least two weeks. If vaccines will be given in the near future, this protocol should be started one to two weeks prior and continued for two weeks after.

*Dosage recommendations are for 150-pound adults.  For children’s dosages, divide their weight by 150 and multiply that number by the adult dosage to get the child’s dosage recommendations.

For instance, for a 60-pound child:

60 / 150 =  .4 x  500 mg (adult chlorella dosage) = 200 mg

(Note: That formula will not be necessary for all supplements as some can/may need to be taken in higher doses.)

Chlorella

This natural food is a plant-based algae that is very efficient at binding to and removing heavy metals through the bowels. You can read my article on Chlorella, how it moves metals and things like candida out of the body, as well as how it affects detoxification here.

It is the powerhouse and most important part of any detox protocol. Chlorella not only helps get out stored toxins but also offers the bonus of helping support the body’s detox systems so that those toxins can LEAVE the body!

Digestion discomfort is common with chlorella when it does not contain added enzymes, which is why HFFG’s Chlorella Detox contains added enzymes.

Additionally, it is very important to make sure the chlorella is sourced from a clean location to avoid adding more toxins into your body when it comes from somewhere like Japan or China. (HFFG’s Chlorella is sourced from South Korea, one of the cleanest sources of chlorella.)

Per Dr. Mercola’s dosage recommendations for heavy metal detox:

Start with 500 mg (1 tablet/capsule) or ¼ tsp of powder once daily.  Over the course of one or two weeks, work up to 10 tablets or 1 tsp of powder daily.

Take chlorella 30 minutes before dinner.

Vitamin C

Both in recent years and in the past, doctors have begun realizing the benefits of
mega Vitamin C doses to cure chronic diseases like cancer. While some conventional
doctors think mega doses like those recommended by orthomolecular and naturopathic
physicians are dangerous, there have not been any reported overdoses. In contrast,
there are a quarter of a million deaths related to prescription drugs being used as
recommended by the doctor. Any vitamin C that the body does not need will be flushed out through the bowels. There is no potential for toxicity with vitamin C.

Vitamin C works in more ways than we can count to help detox the body and protect the body from harmful toxins. It is a very potent antioxidant, protects the body from oxidative damage, helps repair tissues, and so much more.

2,000 mg to 5,000 mg per day (or more) in doses of 1,000 mg – 2,000 mg at a time and taken frequently throughout the day. For children, doses should be not more than 500 mg at a time. (See Dr. Klenner’s chart for more information on proper dosing.)

Our family uses Nutribiotic’s non-GMO sodium ascorbate for Vitamin C therapeutic dosing: http://www.vitacost.com/nutribiotic-buffered-sodium-ascorbate-vitamin-c-powder-16-oz

Vitamin E

This vitamin supplement is important to take in conjunction with Vitamin C for detoxification regimens.  It is an antioxidant that strengthens virtually all functions and cells of the body.

For detox, purchase a supplement without fillers or additives.  Purchase one that specifies it as “d-alpha-tocopherol” and NOT “dl-alpha-tocopherol” (notice the “l” difference in the undesired synthetic version). I prefer one of the following Vitamin E supplements:

http://www.vitacost.com/now-foods-sun-e-400-120-softgels

http://www.vitacost.com/garden-of-life-vitamin-code-raw-vitamin-e-60-vegetarian-capsules-3

Take 600 IU daily together with the Vitamin C after a meal.

Garlic

Garlic is one of the most valuable foods on this planet.  It has been used since Biblical times for many purposes including lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, preventing heart attacks, and even for cancer treatment.  It’s most notable quality is its status as a natural antibiotic.

Fresh garlic can be used for this protocol and is recommended as three cloves of raw garlic per day (taken with a spoonful of honey helps).  It is important to know, however, that “fresh” garlic from the store can often be from China which means it’s been irradiated.  This exposure to radiation renders the garlic dead and inactive.  Look for organic garlic or fresh garlic from a farmer’s market, grow your own, or get it from a local organic produce co-operative!

For those who cannot tolerate fresh garlic, you can take an odorless garlic supplement like this:

http://www.vitacost.com/kyolic-aged-garlic-extract-cardiovascular-original-formula-100-300-capsules-18

Selenium

When combined with Vitamin E, selenium protects the body from the formation of free radicals.  This is especially important during detoxification when heavy metals circulating the body can form into free radicals without these nutrients.

Dosages up to 200 micrograms (mcg) per day is safe; it is recommended not to take more than 400 micrograms per day.  The average adult can simply eat two to four Brazil nuts per day to get an all-natural food source of this mineral; children can eat one or two per day (provided the nuts are not grown in mineral-deficient soil). You can also check out HFFG’s Thyroid Mineral Support which contains the necessary amount of selenium. If you are on a multivitamin, check to see if it contains selenium.

You can also check out HFFG’s Kid’s Special Multivitamin Formula to get a wide variety of the nutrients needed to detox, including 200 mcg of selenium, 500 mg of vitamin C, 150 iu’s of vitamin E, and much more.

HFFG’s Kid’s Special Multivitamin Berry Pomegranate: http://healthyfamiliesforgod.com/store/?slug=product_info&cPath=22&products_id=78

Cilantro

Cilantro is the often underplayed superhero in the world of detoxification.  It is so strong that people with amalgam dental fillings (fillings with mercury in them) can have a metal reaction upon eating foods with cilantro like fresh salsa. This is not common, however, and would indicate severe toxicity.

For those who may react to this food in oral form, a tincture (liquid form in a dropper-bottle) can be used.  One would apply tincture to the wrists and rub in twice daily.

For others, using a lot of cilantro in food is helpful; adding to salads, pureeing up in dips and dressings, adding to soups, and even juicing. It is best to purchase organic cilantro or grow it yourself. It can even be grown inside in potted containers in the colder months.

Probiotics

Since gut health is absolutely vital for a person’s body to be able to absorb these nutrients, a probiotic supplement is crucial.  Good bacteria from probiotics also helps protect the intestinal lining from being broken down. The intestinal wall is our strongest defense for a healthy immune system and for preventing allergies, autoimmune diseases, and much more.

To get this protection, you can use a probiotic supplement like HFFG’s Baby Biotic, HFFG’s Children’s Chewable probiotic, or probiotic-rich foods such as kefir (unsweetened made from whole raw milk, coconut kefir, or water kefir), kombucha, or lacto-fermented vegetables.

Very important additional tips:

During detoxification, a person may feel worse before feeling better.  This is because toxins will once again begin circulating through the blood stream and in the bowels. If one’s transit time (the time it takes for food to go through the entire digestive system from the mouth to the toilet) is slow, toxins are likely to get reabsorbed back into the body when sitting in the intestines for a long period of time. Consequently, getting adequate fiber intake, especially from vegetables and leafy greens, is crucial. Avoid consuming things like pasteurized dairy, refined flours, and refined sugars to avoid constipation or slower transit time. It is ideal for everyone to test their body’s transit time. This can be done by consuming corn or beets (beets are healthier and turn the bowels red; corn is less healthy and not digested so it will come out whole in the bowels) and counting the hours from when that food is consumed to the time it is found in the bowels. Ideal transit time is less than 24 hours.

In cases of extreme toxicity, ask your health professional about coffee enemas or read more about them here: http://drlwilson.com/articles/COFFEE%20ENEMA.HTM.

It is crucial to drink plenty of water as this is the best way to help toxins exit the body.  To find the minimum amount of water a person should drink, divide their weight in half.  That is the minimum number of ounces they should drink each day during a normal lifestyle.  During a detox protocol, that amount should be higher. Make sure the water is not city tap water with fluoride and chlorine.

Dietary changes are incredibly important to help this process be successful.  Eliminate sugars and processed foods as listed in the beginning of this post.  Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are essential to keep the liver strong during the detoxification process.

Some Unorthodox Considerations on Lyme Disease

lyme disease

Where I live, ticks are literally a part of everyday life. We have a farm with half of our property being heavily wooded. As a natural health practitioner, I often get asked about my thoughts on Lyme Disease treatment. I’m not going to claim to be anything close to an expert on this complicated and devastating illness. There is much to know and just not enough info out there about this complicated disease yet.

For now, I’m simply going to throw some additional considerations on the topic of Lyme Disease. These are things that I personally found quite intriguing and my research and I hope you do too!

Eliminating Fear

First off, I would like to offer my thoughts of the dominating fears surrounding Lyme Disease. I am obviously a big proponent of proactive health, but I refuse to be engulfed by fear of any disease. Fear is such a prison and it robs us of abundant living.

I’m not talking about wise caution here; I’m referring to fear that negatively affects our lives and fills our thoughts with worry.

The Bible has so much to say about fear and this lack of faith, so I won’t get into it all. In many instances, Scripture reveals that people were given the same fate as the one they feared. I would encourage those struggling with fear to really seek God more intimately and find rest in His plan and purpose.

Focusing On A Strong Immune System (And Even Reconsidering Antibiotics)

I’m a farmer. And if you read my post The Best Health Advice Comes From Farmers, you know there is a lot we can learn about our health from farmers! When it comes to Lyme disease with goats, for example (because that’s what I raise), we know they can have Lyme disease without any symptoms. Farmers know that the ones who end up with chronic health issues from it are those who already had a pre-existing weak immune system.

I believe the same holds true for people. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans have weakened immune systems. This is not only because of the Standard American Diet full of junk food and nutritionally-negative food, but also because of the many things we have in our medicine, food, and environment that negatively damages our immune system.

80 percent immune system in gut

Do you know that in my practice, almost every single client I help have gut dysbiosis and resulting weak immune system? It is so common today that we think it is normal, but it is anything from normal. Common, yes. Normal, no.

You can click here to check out my post Gut Destroyers with a list of some of the things that really damage our immune system. The thing that is most damaging to the gut (and the immune system) is, consequently, the very thing they use to treat Lyme disease: broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Now this where it gets controversial, and that’s okay. I don’t have all the answers and I’m not saying antibiotics shouldn’t be used for treating Lyme Disease. I’m saying for me, personally, I would seek strong, natural antibiotics that help support the immune system (see below). You see, there’s no evidence that long-term antibiotic treatment even helps. According to a 2012 article in The Open Neurology Journal:

There are no currently available tests to determine whether the spirochetes are actually present or not present in an individual, and whether the bacteria are active or inactive. Hence, often cited recommendations about the duration of treatment, eg four weeks is curative or adequate treatment, have no factual basis to support that recommendation…1

It goes on to say:

B. burgdorferi is sensitive in vitro to various antibiotics, including the penicillins, tetracyclines, and macrolides, but there are a number of mitigating factors that affect the clinical efficacy of these antibiotics.

There continue to be various recommendations regarding antibiotic treatment of patients with relapsing or persisting symptoms…With the exception of the study that involved a month of intravenous ceftriaxone followed by two months of oral doxycycline, and subsequent studies of either one month or ten weeks of intravenous ceftriaxone [22], there have been no randomized, placebo-controlled trials of longer duration, using other antibiotic regimens.1

And to make matters worse, 1 out of every 3 people who receive doxycycline treatment for Lyme disease have one or more drug-related adverse events.2

And more expert input on the topic of antibiotics for Lyme Disease:

Antibiotics alone may not suffice because Lyme disease is caused by an intracellular spirochete bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. “Intracellular means that the spirochete gets into the cell and therefore is not always available to the antibiotics,” explains Isaac Eliaz, MD, coauthor of the journal report and founder of Amitabha Medical Clinic and Healing Center in Sebastopol, California. “The cell membrane inadvertently protects the bacteria and shields it from the antibiotics. The bacteria can also hide dormant in the nervous system, among other places, where antibiotic drugs can’t reach them.”4

Some experts even believe that antibiotics drive the spirochete deeper into the body’s cells, resulting in a higher risk of chronic Lyme symptoms.

Furthermore, there is so much overlap in the symptoms of other health issues commonly-related to gut dysbiosis (aka leaky gut), such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome that we can see the similarities in potential underlying issues as well.

Now if a strong immune system is the most important thing for helping keep one healthy despite the presence of Lyme spirochete, then we must consider the implications of antibiotic treatment–especially long-term antibiotic treatment–on the symptoms and severity of the disease.

Leading Lyme expert Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt says:

We have recognized that today many if not most Americans are carriers of the infection. Most infected people are symptomatic, but the severity and type of the symptoms varies greatly.5

There is much to consider with the difference a strong immune system can have on our exposure to a wide range of viruses, bacteria (including Lyme), and environmental toxins.

Realizing the Unreliability of Tests

According to Dr. Klinghardt, the tests used nowadays are not reliable:

To use conventional diagnostic tests such as the Western Blot, one has to think in paradoxes: the patient has to be treated with an effective treatment modality first before the patient recovers enough to produce the antibodies, which then are looked for in the test. Since antibody production is greatly compromised in infected individuals, it makes no sense to use these tests as the gold standard or benchmark for the presence of Bb (Borrelia burgdoferi). 5

And Realizing It’s Not Just Deer Ticks

There are many other insects that can carry Lyme spirochete. According to Dr. Klinghardt:

We also are aware that in endemic areas in the US up to 22 percent of stinging flies and mosquitoes (2, 8, 9, and 10) are carriers of Bb and co-infections. In South East Germany and Eastern Europe 12 percent of mosquitoes have been shown to be infected. In addition, many spiders, flees, lice and other stinging insects carry spirochetes and co-infections. Making the history of a tick bite a condition for a physician to be willing to even consider the possibility of a Bb infection seems cynical and cruel.5

Furthermore, dairy and beef animals can carry Lyme:

A tick-borne coinfection, Bartonella, has been detected in 89% beef cattle tested from Oklahoma and 17% of dairy cattle from California.  Recently, a study by the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University reported finding one or more species of bartonella in 82.4% of cattle they tested. 6

In a few tests, animal colostrum and blood tested positive for the co-infections. Thus, there is the possibility of Lyme disease bacteria and/or co-infections in meat and milk. However, I am not pointing this out as a recommendation to avoid meat or milk. (In fact, there are anecdotal reports of individuals eliminating their Lyme Disease symptoms with raw milk.)

I am pointing these things out simply to show the strong presence of exposure to Lyme disease and related co-infection bacteria in our lives. It is unavoidable.

In my opinion, fearing Lyme Disease is a waste of energy. If we fear it to the point of avoiding possibility of encountering it, we would have to avoid everyday things like going outside, avoid drinking milk and eating meat, etc. For me personally, I know that that is not the way God wants me to live! I think the only way to handle the potential of chronic, symptomatic Lyme disease is nourish our bodies and focus on maintaining a strong immune system through proper nutrition (whole-foods diet and quality supplements), avoiding exposure to Gut Destroyers, etc., and trusting God with the rest.

And I believe we can utilize natural therapies that will help strengthen our immune system and increase our vitality.

Natural Therapies

When it comes to natural therapies for Lyme disease, we just aren’t going to see documented research on these things. There’s no profit in utilizing nutritional therapies that can’t be patented and cost pennies on the dollar compared to patented pharmaceuticals with kickbacks. But there are some rogue physicians out there that have some excellent information to share with us on the topic. Here are just a few things I will note:

Vitamin C

If there were a one-word synonym for lyme disease it would be INFLAMMATION. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in quantity is the most powerful natural anti-inflammatory agent there is. 3

The following article details a physician’s clinical experience in treating both acute and chronic Lyme disease with Intravenous Vitamin C:

The Clinical Impact of Vitamin C: My Personal Experiences as a Physician

Vitamin D

Vitamin D…is to be encouraged as it is frequently low in patients with persistent Lyme disease, and may be helpful in providing anti-inflammatory benefit.1

Here again, we see proof that a weak immune system and poor liver function (the main reasons for low Vitamin D) may be an underlying issue for those experiencing symptoms of Lyme Disease.

Colloidal Silver

Silver kills lyme (and other infections) through oxidation first, then alkylation.

When using silver for lyme disease, we should keep in mind that smaller particle sizes are typically better. This allows for more free silver ions to be available, and more surface area for the silver to generate its “oxidative” actions for killing lyme. Silver hydrosol, the type in Argentyn 23, is probably one of the best. It has no silver protein in it, no stabilizers. Hydrosol just means the silver is suspended in pure water, whereas other colloids might use solvents.

To many patients, but particularly those with lyme, silver can also bring warning bells as it is in fact a heavy metal. All lyme patients should have had a heavy metal workup with conventional blood tests and with provoked tissue challenges as certain heavy metals can be profoundly immunosuppressive. Silver is a heavy metal, but its clinical effects are opposite to the poisonous metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury). It seems that the margin of safety is far far greater for silver than for other heavy metals.

For more information on colloidal silver and Lyme disease, click here.

Homeopathy

“Please consider putting in a plug for the homeopathic remedy, Ledum. Ledum in the 1M potency is almost a specific for Lyme disease. I use it in my own practice and have several cures of Lyme disease with it. (I am a homeopath.)

“Regards,

“R. F., M.D.”

Dr. R. F. (definitely not his real initials) is yet another natural-minded physician who is likely to lose his medical license if State “health” authorities find out that he’s successfully treating inflammation without antibiotic drugs. 3

Complete Natural Therapy Protocol

On many websites, Dr. Klinghardt’s entire protocol can be seen listed out, including here. As you will see, Dr. Klinghardt focuses on detoxing heavy metals and cites the most important nutrients are Iodine and other minerals. His protocol is extensive, so you may want to find a naturopathic or integrative practitioner to assist you in this.

Blessings of good health,

How to Make Thick Homemade Raw Goats’ Milk Yogurt

$

13245356_10209937734139108_2551220711877427942_n

I have a tendency to stick with kefir because 1) it’s totally raw 2) it has more benefits than yogurt and 3) it’s so much easier! But there really is nothing like a healthy yogurt with berries and granola!

Unfortunately, flavored yogurt from the store often contains more sugar than Lucky Charms! Making it homemade is cheap, healthier, and far more rewarding!

But making yogurt from raw milk and getting it thick can be tricky, but it can be especially tricky with goats’ milk. Since we raise goats for milk, I had to figure out a way to make it work! And because I’m really not a big fan of heating the milk to 180* (thereby destroying the beneficial enzymes) to make yogurt, my goal was to find a way to make goats’ milk yogurt thick without pasteurizing the milk. I did, and here’s how!

(This recipe can be used to make raw milk yogurt with cow’s milk too but I recommend reducing amount of gelatin by 1 tsp per quart.)

Homemade Thick Raw Goats' Milk Yogurt
Yields 1
Finally! A homemade raw goats' milk yogurt that is thick and has added health benefits from gelatin!

Print
Ingredients
  1. 1 quart raw goats' milk
  2. 1/4 cup yogurt starter (I use plain, unsweetened whole milk, grass-fed yogurt)
  3. 1 Tbsp gelatin (Vital Proteins is from grass-fed beef)
Instructions
  1. Heat milk to 110*F slowly over low-medium heat. Be careful not to heat over 118* or the benefical enzymes will be destroyed. Whisk in gelatin vigorously for about two minutes to ensure that it is dissolved and blended well. Then whisk in yogurt starter. Cover and keep in 95-110* location for 8-10 hours. (It will still be very runny at the end of this culturing time, and that is okay. The gelatin will make the yogurt thick once it is refrigerated.) Refrigerate for at least 8 hours.
  2. If you would like to make a healthy sweetened yogurt, add in raw honey and/or maple syrup and a teaspoon of vanilla before refrigerating. This works best to maintain a thick yogurt instead of adding the sweetener after refrigeration and having to whisk it in (which makes it lose some of its thickness).
Notes
  1. Having a yogurt thermometer and somewhere to maintain the yogurt at a steady 95-110* temperature is imperative. Options include a yogurt maker, an Instant Pot, an oven setting that goes that low, etc. A cooler with hot water added can be used but temperature will need to be checked periodically.

The amount of gelatin is enough to make it thick but without being too much like Jello. The health benefits of gelatin are incredible, including helping improve joint health, help heal and seal a leaky gut, reduce likelihood of stretch marks during pregnancy and other skin benefits. cae goat article

Here at HFFG, I’ve written about vaccinations, circumcision, and other extremely controversial topics. But this may be the most controversial post I have ever written; just or a different crowd. I’ve never been one to shy away from controversy (haha anyone who has followed HFFG for awhile knows that’s an understatement!) but I want to approach this topic carefully, respectfully, and with the disclaimer that these are my thoughts and my research on the topic, to which I am entitled.

In this post, I am going to detail some very crucial facts that seem to be completely missing on the topic of CAE in goats that do many farmers a great disservice.

First off, for those who are new to goats, CAE is Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis. From Merck Vet Manual:

CAE is manifested clinically as polysynovitis-arthritis in adult goats and less commonly as progressive paresis (leukoencephalomyelitis) in kids. Subclinical or clinical interstitial pneumonia, indurative mastitis (“hard udder”), and chronic wasting have also been attributed to infection with this virus.

In the goat world, CAE is one of the most dreaded illnesses. Because it is passed through milk, kids (baby goats) are pulled from birth to never nurse off of their dam (mother) but to be bottle fed on pasteurized milk in order to hopefully prevent the kid(s) from being CAE positive.

But there are so many problems with all of this. And that’s what this article is going to cover. I encourage my goat-owning readers to set aside everything they’ve ever been told about CAE and consider the information I share below from veterinarians and documented research.

Disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian. While this may limit my credibility on this topic, I believe it also offers the advantage of not being biased with the current train of thought on this topic.

Problem #1: Shortcomings of the CAE Test

The first problem with CAE is that a positive blood test does not test for active disease; it simply tests for antibodies. A positive test means simply that a goat was exposed to CAE and developed antibodies to it.

Now those who are all for vaccinations or those who are for natural immunity to disease know that developing antibodies to something is a good thing!

The concern with a positive CAE test is that a goat is actually testing positive for an active form of this disease, resulting in the possibility of the above-listed health issues. Unfortunately, there is no way to know if the positive test result indicates simply antibodies to the disease or an active infection with the virus.

Another issue with the CAE test is that it does not test for the specific CAE strain. What? Well according to a research veterinarian at Washington State University (who had to remain anonymous so as not to cause problems with his research on CAE), there are about 12 major strains with the total number of CAE strains totaling over 20. Some of those strains are believed to be the ones that lead to disease; others are very much less pathogenic. Current ELISA CAE testing does not test for specific strains, so a positive result not only could simply mean antibodies have been developed but could also indicate the presence of a completely non-infectious strain of CAE.

And here’s another problem with the test: Many people find that their goats, after many years of CAE prevention, will suddenly find a negative goat test positive. Or a positive dam have dam-raised kids who test negative. I’m in all of the goat groups. I see this happening all the time. For instance, just recently:

We have a herd of [goats] and have tested the last two years with negative results. But this fall was surprised by a CAE positive result on a yearling that is out of a doe that has tested negative (for 3 years, is 5 years old) with no elevated levels and all of the animals she has been in contact with have always been negative. Of course she freshened with a gorgeous udder and I am… questioning the testing and how she could possibly be infected if she has never been in contact with a positive animal?

Or this one:

I am the only breeder of [breed of goats] in this corner of the state… All of my foundation stock came from “CAE free” herds and some very reputable breeders. I’ve never had any symptoms or problems in my herd, and they are all fat, shiny, gleaming happy goats. This year, I entered into a contract… who wanted to buy my entire 2016 kid crop, but required that I test my herd before transferring ownership of the kids. So, I tested, and was STUNNED when my entire herd came back positive for CAE. NOW WHAT?! I’m hearing that I should have my entire herd euthanized, despite the fact that we have no symptoms and everybody appears to be completely healthy. I have 8-10 year old high producing does that are the loves of my life, and I’m supposed to kill them??

Now I know those of you who are new to goats have your jaw on the floor thinking that a simple blood test could cause someone to consider (and possibly carry out) euthanizing an entire herd of beautiful healthy goats. But this is how it is in the goat world.

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone posted this type of thing in goat groups on the topic of CAE tests going from positive to negative or negative to positive without exposure or people considering killing healthy goats based on a blood test that doesn’t even always indicate an active disease.

Even popular goat website Tennessee Meat Goats cites:

A goat infected with CAE but who has not produced antibodies will test negative but still can shed the virus and infect other goats.

Complicating the matter even more, it is also possible to have negative kids out of a positive dam. Further, a dam who has given birth to twins can produce one offspring which tests positive and another that tests negative. . . out of the same litter.

You see, a negative test can mean a sick goat! And a positive test can mean a healthy goat!

Unfortunately, it is extremely common for goat breeders nowadays to cull stock, pull kids from birth, etc., all based off of the results of this fallacious testing. That’s a lot of lives at stake simply for a test that the goat world has been taught to put so much stock in. So that’s our first major problem.

Problem #2: Positive Results Do Not Mean Symptomatic Disease

Every single “respectable” source detailing CAE always disclaims:

Most CAE virus infections, however, are subclinical.

As mentioned above, many of the goats who test positive for CAE likely have one of the non-infectious strains or another strain that will not go on to exhibit problems.

The research veterinarian mentioned above was asked: “If so few goats show symptoms, why is this such a dreaded disease?”

His answer was: “Good Question. Many goat owners do not feel that the control of an infection that only causes ~10% disease is not regarded as a serious disease.”

Anyone who has not been in the goat world for very long will understandably look at this and wonder why the goat world makes such a big deal of CAE. They may think that effort would be better spent focusing on avoiding CL and Johne’s (which is the bacterium linked to Crohn’s disease in humans). And I agree.

A question on this note was posed to Washington State University research veterinarian and his answer follows:

Question: I have seen herds that have tested positive for YEARS and they look and act as healthy as my negatives. What is so absolutely horrible or threatening about the disease that people fear it so much as though it is like rabies? Am I being naive in my thinking? Why should these goats be euthanized so quickly? Are veterinarians who are not learned in the disease giving poor advice?
Answer:
The differences here are what were learned in school versus what is reality…The reasons for controlling CAE depend on the economic consequences (sales) of infection, not the disease consequences.

Changing the way the entire goat world views CAE based on these truths is not likely to happen.

For now, we must at least accept the shortcomings of the ELISA test results and its fallacious tendency to indicate disease.

Problem #3: Not Seeing Value in Antibodies

The fact that this one is not completely obvious, especially to those who vaccinate, blows my mind. The premise behind vaccines (exposing the body to a virus in order to stimulate an antibody reaction) is what is naturally taking place for many goats who test positive for CAE. Many of these goats have been naturally exposed to CAE and have developed antibodies to it. Natural antibodies to disease is far better than any chemically-induced antibody response (which may not actually happen the way it is shown to in lab experiments) that weakens the immune system with harmful chemicals.

Lately, Hollywood explored the value of receiving natural antibodies to improve human lentiviruses through goats’ milk from CAE-positive goats when Charlie Sheen’s doctor prescribed this for his HIV. Dr. Sam Chachoua explored the world and various cultures who highly-valued milk from CAE-positive goats to ward off severe diseases with supporting research. Of course, the goat world was in an uproar!

Now I’m not going to go along with Dr. Chachoua and claim that goats’ milk from CAE-positive goats can cure HIV, because quite honestly from my research, it appears that HIV is not even an objective disease or solid diagnosis anyway. (As if this post wasn’t controversial enough! But I dare you to watch the documentary House of Numbers and decide for yourself. Testimonies from top-notch CDC employees from the 1980’s expose the lies surrounding HIV. In a nutshell, HIV is a completely subjective diagnosis; and it is an all-encompassing term used to “diagnose” any illness that is representative of a weakened immune system so that expensive antiviral drugs can be sold.)

I do believe that there should be some serious consideration given to the potential benefits of fresh, unpasteurized milk full of antibodies for both animals and humans. There are numerous antibodies passed to babies through unheated colostrum. Heat-treating the milk to eliminate one virus (or more likely its antibodies) at the sake of losing many other antibodies could be devastating to the health of the newborn.

For (human and animal) babies to receive natural antibodies through their mother’s milk is the perfect vaccine. In fact, before the widespread use of vaccines, babies received immunity to diseases through the placental and milk transfer of antibodies. Once vaccines were in widespread use, mothers lost their naturally-derived immunity to things and became unable to offer their newborns this protection, which is coincidentally why so many babies are at risk nowadays. But I digress. My point is that everyone is looking for the perfect vaccines, and naturally-transferred antibodies is often exactly that.

(For those who are interested in pursuing the HIV/CAE link, here is a link to the patent for an HIV vaccine using a CAE virus: http://www.google.com/patents/WO1997033615A2?cl=en )

Furthermore, as indicated above, pulling kids at birth is not guarantee that they will test negative for CAE. From 2011 research published in Experimental Immunology:

Similar method of CAE control based on weaning kids immediately after birth and rearing them in isolation on virus-free milk was unable to prevent spreading the disease…1

Which really makes one think twice about all of these breeders selling kids as “Raised on CAE-prevention…” which brings me to the next problem:

Problem #4: Not Prioritizing the Importance of A Healthy Immune System

The current practice of pulling kids from birth (which stresses them out, thereby weakening the immune system) and feeding them pasteurized milk (which also does not support a healthy immune system) is a recipe for chronic disease. One of the most thorough goat information websites, Fiasco Farm, points out:

We also feel that raising the kid in an unnatural way (bottle feeding) causes stress. Kids need their mothers to love them and teach them. Without their mothers they become stressed, thus causing disease. Pasteurizing milk kills bacteria, and yes, it will kill the CAE virus, but it also kills the beneficial bacteria in the milk. Without this beneficial bacteria, the kids immune systems do not become as strong as it would on raw milk. Pasteurizing “cooks” the milk. We believe that kids especially need “uncooked” colostrum to get a proper start in life. This cooking destroys much of the nutrients and vitamins in the milk (please read: raw milk info). Also, we have found that kids that have access to their own mother’s milk as they are growing up, grow bigger and stronger, and are hardier and more disease resistant as adults.

As a (human) natural health practitioner, I cannot believe this detriment to young goat kids’ immune systems from pasteurized colostrum/milk and increased risk of poor health is not more obvious to modern-day goat farmers.

Some may say that the risk of a goat having CAE is worth this risk. However, the risk of a weakened immune system is much more likely than the 10% risk of a CAE-positive goat exhibiting any manifestation of the CAE virus.

In fact, it is easy to see that CAE symptoms as listed above are a clear indicator of a weakened immune system. It is my belief that promoting a strong immune system and avoiding nutritional deficiencies will ward off manifestation of CAE disease in goats.

Anything that stands to weaken the immune system, such as stress, poor diet (including pasteurized milk), antibiotics, and nutritional deficiencies (especially copper and other minerals for goats) knowingly triggers any disease symptoms–whether it’s CAE, CL, or other caprine illnesses. This leads me to the next problem:

#Problem #5: CAE Blamed for Every Illness in Positive (and Sometimes Even Negative) Goats

And so the result of goat owners/farmers/breeders not recognizing the inadequacies of the testing, the low incidence of disease manifestation in CAE-positive goats, etc. is that CAE is blamed every time a goat has issues.

Not getting bred? Must be CAE! Nevermind that the goat is likely deficient in the minerals crucial to breeding or is overweight or is fed soy-based feed that contains hormone-altering phytoestrogens…

Recurring mastitis? Must be CAE! Nevermind that there are dozens of reasons a goat can get mastitis and that antibiotics have been proven to increase the likelihood of making mastitis recur. (REF: http://cid.oxfordjournals.org/content/50/12/1551.full )

Not putting on weight? Must be CAE! Nevermind that it could be Johne’s, mineral deficiencies, poor rumen health and thus weakened immune system, parasite overload, or a dozen other things.

A positive CAE test often prevents a farmer/breeder from actually considering the real, underlying root cause of a potential health issue that can and should be addressed that is often not active CAE infection.

My Experience

On my farm, I’ve had CAE-positive goats and CAE-negative goats. I had CAE-negative goats who were wrought with health problems. Had they tested positive for CAE, I likely would have fallen into the crowd and blamed it on that. They were wasting away or having problems with a congested udder. And now that I know the truth about the testing and CAE strains, maybe they had an active CAE case that tests negative as we discussed above! Or maybe it was because they were ones that were neglected for years before they came into my possession and had serious mineral deficiencies.

And on my farm, I had (and continue to have) CAE-positive goats who are the healthiest goats I’ve ever owned. The have fabulous pregnancies, birth very, healthy strong kids, produce lots of milk, are very resilient to parasites, and never get lice (due to getting sufficient sulfur).

When we reduced our herd to a more manageable size, I chose to keep many of our CAE-positive goats for many reasons, the first being their incredibly good health. Also, I know there’s something to consider in the health benefits of fresh milk a goat who successfully develops natural antibodies to various viruses. There is ongoing research into this for not only the CAE antibodies but many other virus antibodies as well.

And as a natural health practitioner, I strongly believe it’s worth considering the benefits for humans of drinking fresh, unpasteurized milk from these kinds of goats as well.

Final Considerations

Of course, because of the biases towards CAE based on the problems listed above, it can be difficult to sell kids from a CAE-positive dam. And there is a chance that some goats may go on to develop clinical symptoms of CAE (although I have not personally had that happen yet).

So let me be clear and say that I am not saying that a positive CAE test means nothing at all. As the evidence states, there is a small percentage of CAE-positive goats that will go on to exhibit chronic health issues such as arthritis, congested, udder, etc. Just like there is with anything.

And I am not saying that the pathogenic strains of CAE and active infection with such strain(s) is not horrendously tragic. In the small percentage of situations that really do experience kids with seizures and adults with chronic and life-altering arthritis, it is horrible.

But there is a lot wrong with the weight we put on CAE tests and with the current train of thought on a CAE-positive result. Washington State University research vet confirms it in his answer:

Question: Is the disease so dreaded or is it blown out of proportion by miss-informed breeders on both sides of the fence?
Answer:
It is being blown out of proportion – the disease.

For large-scale goat farmers, it is of course good practice (economically) to strive for CAE-negative herds.

For homesteaders like myself, we have the freedom to weigh the evidence and not put the life of healthy animals at stake based on the results of a simply imperfect blood test. And to reap the benefits of fresh, unpasteurized milk from healthy animals.

(Be sure to check out my post Milk: Helpful or Harmful for the vast differences in nutritional content of pasteurized vs. unprocessed milk.)

Questions To Ask Your Raw Milk Farmer Before Drinking the Milk!

Questions ask farmer raw milk photo

So you’ve read my post Milk: Helpful or Harmful or other sources and realize that the only (animal) milk worth drinking is fresh, unpasteurized milk from cows, goats, etc. And now you are on the hunt for a good source of local, fresh, and SAFE raw milk.

It’s not just a matter of “Oh, my neighbor has a cow and is selling milk!”

There are a few things you should ask about before deciding on a good source of fresh milk. As a dairy farmer myself, I will give you the inside, need-to-know info for making sure the milk you buy is good for your family!

But the way to get this info and decide for yourself if it is healthy milk is to visit the farm! This is very important for purchasing fresh milk!

When you arrive at the farm, look around. Do the animals look healthy? (Note: dairy animals tend to look quite thin, so do not fret if you see their hip bones!)

Are they waist-high in manure?

Do they have a large pasture area to roam and graze? (Note: While cows are grazers, goats are browsers–they prefer to eat bushes, tree leaves, etc. but will eat grass if none of those are available.)

Once you’ve had a look around the farm, here are some questions to ask your (potential) dairy farmer:

What is Done for Milk/Animal Testing?

Somatic Cell Count/Coliform

These tests are pretty standard in large dairy operations, but not so common (or necessary in my opinion) for very small dairy farms. Indicating the possible presence of mastitis, I find these tests to be necessary when producers cannot personally and closely monitor each individual animal. For those who only have a few animals which are like pets (as in our case), we observe our animals so closely that we will notice signs of these things being off before it would show up on a test. Consequently, I don’t believe having these tests done are completely necessary when purchasing milk from a very small farm. However, if the farm you are purchasing milk from does not seem to provide very close, personalized attention to each animal or is a large operation, I would request to see regular somatic cell count numbers. They should be far below 100,000 mL (but preferably lower).

Johnes

Johne’s (pronounced “Yoh-nees”) disease and paratuberculosis are two names for the same animal disease. Named after a German veterinarian*, this fatal gastrointestinal disease was first clearly described in a dairy cow in 1895. It causes thickening of the intestinal wall which prevents the animal from absorbing nutrients, severe weight loss, diarrhea, and eventually death. These animals will be eating but essentially starving to death.

The reason it is important to purchase milk from animals that test negative for Johnes is that this is the same mycobacterium that is seen in Crohn’s disease, leading to the belief that consumption of animal products from Johnes-positive animals may be a contributing factor to Crohn’s disease and potentially other bowel diseases. (The link between these two is highly debated with research on both sides. Based on the research I have done, I feel it is especially important to simply purchase milk from Johnes-negative animals when that milk will be given to small children.)

In the U.S., it is estimated that 8% of the beef herds and 68% of the dairy herds contain at least one animal infected with this mycobacterium. 1 This mycobacterium is not killed with pasteurization and a large percentage of milk from the grocery store may be from Johnes-positive animals, so buying fresh milk from a local farm with Johnes-negative animals is best.

There are other tests that can be done on animals to ensure they are healthy but generally, a small producer who keeps a close watch on each animal personally will see signs of illness and not sell that animal’s milk to customers.

What Are Standard Animal Health Practices?

What is the animal fed?

I knew a local farmer who sold raw milk from beautiful cows. This farmer claimed to be raising them on grass hay and organic feed. Upon further questioning, I discovered this farmer was feeding his cows large square hay bales. I never buy large square hay bales, only small ones or round bales, because in our state, large square hay bales have to be treated with chemicals in order to prevent them from molding. This farmer did not know that information and was unknowingly feeding his cows chemically-sprayed hay.

It’s important to buy milk from a knowledgeable farmer.

What kind of hay are they feeding their dairy animals? Is it sprayed with anything at all?

If it’s alfalfa hay, is it Round Up Ready alfalfa?

Look at the hay yourself when you visit the farm? Is it yellow like straw or lush green like grass? Obviously, healthier milk will come from animals fed green hay!

For their milking grains, are they organic or transitional? If not, they are likely GMO.

(And yes, I believe it is 100% okay to drink milk from animals fed grains. Dairy animals are bred to produce such high amounts of milk that they cannot maintain their body condition from producing that much milk without grains. There are a select few dairy farmers who raise their animals without grains but costs are high and profit is likely to be very minimal so expect to pay more if your farmer knows what they are doing!)

What are they given for minerals? Dairy cows and goats require a constant, free-choice supply of supplemental minerals to maintain their health. With a good-quality mineral supplementation, you can bet that the milk will be that much healthier for your family too!

In addition to these things, on our farm, we also give our goats free-choice kelp and raw organic apple cider vinegar in their water, which not only boosts our animals’ health but the nutritional content of the milk as well!

What is used for parasite prevention/treatment? What is the withdrawal time?

I’m not very familiar with cows on this topic, but when it comes to goats, they require strict parasite prevention/treatment programs. The majority of dairy goat producers use regular treatment with chemical dewormers. Many of these have milk withdrawal times but I know of a few producers in my state and other states who jokingly brag on social media about not respecting those milk withdrawal times. This means that the milk you are getting could have circulating chemical dewormers in them; products linked to birth defects, miscarriages, etc. It is imperative before buying goat’s milk that you ask about their parasite prevention/treatment program! If they use words like “Ivermectin,” “Safeguard,” “Valbazen,” etc., these are systemic poisons.

Just so you know though–raising dairy goats is HARD. (I have a post coming up on this!) Goats are incredibly prone to parasites and doing it with these chemicals is tough, so you may have a hard time finding a more organically-minded dairy goat farm.

(I spent hundreds of hours digging up research-based natural methods for keeping our goats healthy. Some of that research on what we now use for parasite prevention can be found found in this post here.)

Also ask your dairy farmer if there are any (other) medications used, when/how they are used, and what the withdrawal time is on those medications. If your farmer does not know the answer to the withdrawal time on them, that should be a red flag.

How is the Milk COoled?

While large-scale producers will have stainless steel cooling tanks, smaller producers have to find other ways of cooling down milk quickly to keep pathogenic bacteria from forming. Simply placing milk in a refrigerator right away is not sufficient for cooling the milk down to ideal temperatures within the ideal time frame.

On our farm, we place a large pan/bowl of ice water in our milk-room refrigerator where the jars of milk go straight after milking and straining. This gives us Grade B milk, one step down from Grade A (which is the stainless steel tanks). Placing milk in the freezer would actually lower it down to Grade D (which means it isn’t cooled to ideal temps for almost two hours!). Those who place it straight in the refrigerator alone are providing Grade E milk, the lowest grade. (Check out this full explanation of grades and temperatures here and why it’s important.)

Taste & Freshness

Taste and freshness are pretty good indicators of a dairy animal’s health. For instance with goats, the milk will taste bitter and/or very “goaty” if the animal is overloaded with parasites or suffering from nutritional deficiencies. The milk will also tend to sour faster or taste off sooner than other fresh milk would. I find that milk from healthy animals should taste fresh for at least seven days. (And remember that unlike pasteurized milk, fresh, unpasteurized milk from healthy animals does not go bad; it simply sours.)

Having A Hard Time Finding Milk?

If you are having a hard time locating some fresh, unpasteurized milk in your area, here are some ideas:

  • Visit your local farmers’ market. While raw milk usually can’t be sold there, you may find a vendor selling goat’s milk soap or other farm products that may indicate that they have dairy animals. Maybe they buy milk from a local farmer that sells it raw! Ask around! This is how I found our first ever source of fresh, raw milk!
  • Check out http://www.realmilk.com/real-milk-finder/ which has lists of raw milk sources in states across the U.S.
  • Contact your local Weston A. Price Chapter Foundation leader(s) and ask them! They usually have a few resources! http://www.westonaprice.org/get-involved/find-local-chapter/

The search for fresh, healthy milk the way God designed it can be tough at first, but it’s worth the effort!

How to Have Youthful, Healthy Skin Naturally--HFFG

Now that I’m nearing 40, I’ve been giving more thought to maintaining healthy skin. For me, having healthy skin isn’t just about physical appearance. It’s about physical health. Our skin health is an outward expression of our inner health. And with summer here, it’s even more important to take steps to keep our skin healthy. Unfortunately, most of the skin care products available today are full of toxins that can cause long-term health problems. As always, nourishing our body can and should be done naturally. Here are my secrets to having youthful, healthy skin naturally.

Essential Oils for Healthy, Youthful Skin

There are MANY essential oils that support healthy skin.

Myrrh has been used for thousands of years for maintaining beautiful skin. It was the oil specifically used for six months of beauty treatment for Queen Esther before she became queen!

Before a young woman’s turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics. (Esther 2:12)

Manuka and Patchouli essential oils both have some fabulous research showing them to be a fabulous choice for using to maintain youthful skin after sun exposure. You’ve gotta read this research yourself for the full details since I’m not allowed to detail them myself! Don’t miss the results of these studies if you want to stay looking young!

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23762170

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/247470301

**Please do NOT use cheap and/or store-bought essential oils! Save yourself the money and read my post here on what I learned in my two years of researching essential oils first!

NingXia Red for Antioxidants

An unhealthy response to sun exposure is a result of oxidative damage. Keeping skin healthy with sun exposure is all about having a high intake of antioxidants.

Ningxia antioxidants

NingXia Red is a high-antioxidant drink that derives its ability to protect the body from oxidative damage from wolfberries, fruits, and essential oils all high in antioxidants. Wolfberries are the best known source of zeaxanthin, a xanthophyll, an oxygenated carotenoid. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK92756/)

2-4 ounces of NingXia Red daily will infuse your body with a wealth of antioxidants to support healthy skin, especially in the summertime.

Omegas/Essential Fatty Acids

Research makes it clear that having the correct balance of essential fatty acids in the body will help protect the skin from the inflammatory response caused after sun exposure.

Unfortunately, most people nowadays have too many Omega 6’s and not enough Omega 3’s due to the prevalence of “vegetable” oils (corn, canola, soybean, etc.) in our food supply as well as animal products (meats, dairy, eggs) from animals fed these crops and oils.

To support healthy skin and a healthy response to sun exposure, it is important to eliminate or greatly reduce foods with those ingredients/raised on those ingredients and have daily intake of omega 3’s. Cod liver oil is my favorite way to ensure healthy levels of the right essential fatty acids and thus a healthy response to the sun’s rays. (Click here to read my post with my recommended supplements.)

Healthy Diet

The three main aging foods: refined sugars, refined flour (breads, pastas, crackers, etc.) and vegetable oils.

We’ve already discussed a few of the most important ways to support healthy skin, including avoiding vegetable oils and animal products from animals raised on those crops.

Use healthier oils like extra virgin olive oil, eat more (wild, not farmed) fish, and eat grass-fed meats.

Reduce consumption of foods with flour and refined sugar as much as possible.

In addition to high-antioxidant options like NingXia Red, incorporating more antioxidant-rich foods in the diet are helpful for youthful skin. Citrus, berries, carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens are among the best.

Good health comes from the inside out. Nourish your body and your skin will show it!

“The Soul is More Important than the Body”–The Phrase That’s Devastating God’s People

"The Soul is More Important than the Body"--The Phrase That's Devastating God's People--Healthy Families for God

“The soul is more important than the body.”

In my six years as a Biblical Natural Health Practitioner, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say that in response to conviction to eat healthy. But what they are really saying is,”This is not an area in my life that I want to change.”

And it’s so discouraging. It’s heartbreaking. It does not glorify God and it does not help encourage others in the very real and prevalent problems plaguing the church. The problems that I get emails about every single day.

So in honor of those dear brothers and sisters who have emailed me with their heart-wrenching stories of devastating health problems related to this topic, let’s explore some of the problems with this phrase.

It Ignores the Health Problems Plaguing People in the Church

For one thing, obesity is more common in the church than other groups of society. 1 Studies have even shown that people are more likely to be overweight the more church functions they attend.

What do we expect when we are serving donuts and cookies at every gathering throughout the week?

Once discovering the link between sugar consumption and heart disease, the American Heart Association released guidelines for a maximum daily intake of added sugars.

maximum sugar intake aha

The average serving size of cookie(s) is 12 grams. That is a child’s entire daily maximum recommended amount of added sugars for the entire day. 2 graham crackers is 8 grams–2/3 of their daily maximum.2  You can see where this goes in their heart health…

1978804_725549837484807_1063949768772790189_n

And we must discuss the psychological effects of sugar consumption as well. There are numerous studies showing the link between mental illnesses like depression and anxiety and a person’s sugar consumption. 3

Noted British psychiatric researcher Malcolm Peet has conducted a provocative cross-cultural analysis of the relationship between diet and mental illness. His primary finding may surprise you: a strong link between high sugar consumption and the risk of bothdepression and schizophrenia.

Adding caffeine to the mix greatly increases those risks.4

…the condition of relative hypoglycemia is one of the most common causes of neuropsychiatric illness, and I should like to propose that it has been caused by changes in human dietary habits.

The study proved that a traditional diet of unprocessed foods will have a dramatic effect on 85 percent of neuropsychiatric patients

Having soda machines in the church especially is a doorway to mental (and physical) illness in our teens.

There is a multitude of other ways this high-sugar pattern contributes to poor health: destroying beneficial gut flora and thereby increasing problems like eczema, food allergies, immune health (sugar consumption shuts down white blood cell production for up to five hours after consumption 5), and feeding cancer cells.

It Ignores the Wisdom & Warnings In God’s Word on the Subject

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

In the Old Testament, we can see the lengthy and painstaking measures that were taken in order to maintain the temple. But when the Lord came and gave His Spirit so that we became the Temple, it seems that we have lost that holy respect for the Temple.

The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. (Proverbs 22:3)

1476569_673228222716969_271158747_n

When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. (1 Samuel 4:19)

From Character Sketches Vol. 1:

Notice the last word in that sentence? “Heavy.” Overweight, essentially. It was one of the two causes listed of Eli’s death. Here, the Bible makes sure to mention that his death was a direct consequence of his weight.

Eli is most remembered for being the priest who took little Samuel in when his mother Hannah dedicated him to the Lord as she promised she would.

It’s not often he is known as having been overweight and gluttonous. But these habits had far-reaching consequences on the history of God’s people.

“Eli’s sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the Lord.” 1 Samuel 2:12

These sons of Eli would take more of the meat than they were supposed to and had immoral relationships with women. (Doesn’t sound too abnormal in today’s society, does it?!)

Eli tried rebuking them, but it was too late. His sons, along with the guidance of their overweight father, lead 30,000 Israelites to their death in a battle where they also lost the cherished Ark of the Covenant.

“But why had the priest failed? Why had his sons become gluttonous and immoral? The answer is found in a failure–a lack of discipline in his life. He had a problem of self-control in the area of eating. As his sons grew up, they were very aware of this weakness.

Eli’s lack of self-control in this area opened the way for Satan to defeat his sons in related areas of self-control. The discipline and training for leadership which could have saved their lives and the nation’s future were never given.”

Healthy eating doesn’t just include eating foods that nourish our bodies, and it isn’t about being skinny. It also means eating in a self-controlled manner; and it means teaching our children to be self-controlled as well.

“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control.” Galatians 5:22

The way we eat and maintain our body, God’s Temple, is outward evidence of our spirit and where our heart really is in our relationship with God. They are equally as important because they interrelated.

And it can have a direct impact on our children’s spirit as well.

It Mocks Sin

12112461_1013334162039705_6861460859112475845_n

There are dozens of verses in God’s Word about gluttony. Unfortunately, many Christians joke about it instead. Memes on social media like this one shared by a church leader:

12191720_10208195028816154_7364512712045721072_n

I know, I need to lighten up. But I can’t when I get emails every single day about the overwhelming health problems plaguing my brothers and sisters caused by poor diet. It would take a 10-part blog post series to share some of these heartbreaking emails I get daily. And it’s from the same people who share these kinds of things and their friends who like these posts. These same people who struggle with depression, constant sickness, and being overweight.

We have to stop making a mockery of this lack of self-control and poor stewardship. We want our children to demonstrate self-control in the way they treat others, the way they choose their friends, what they choose to do for extracurricular activities and for peer pressure issues like sex and drugs, but for some reason we feel that having self-control over how we feed our bodies, God’s Temple, is not important. I’m just struggling to understand this.

We must start exposing the sins of gluttony and food addictions, rather than joke about them or make light of them, so that we can set people free and save them–physically, emotionally, and most importantly, spiritually.

Sugar is a Class A addictive substance, just like cocaine and heroin. (Click here to read my post proving that point with research.) I have helped many people overcome sugar addiction the same way drug and alcohol recovery counselors help people overcome other addictions. It’s just not something to joke about.

Some may say that all food is good that God has made. That is very true. But we are calling everything in the grocery store “food.” Twinkies with hydrogenated oils, processed sugar, and artificial colors is not food. Propylene glycol (ingredient used in anti-freeze) found in almost all store-bought ice cream is not food that God has made. It is a food-like substance made by Man. Where does it end with what we call “food?”

Saying, “The soul is more important than the body,” gives God’s people the excuse to continue dishonoring God with their Temple stewardship. It gives people the excuse to feed their gluttony. It steals the opportunity to grow closer in our walk with God by honoring Him with our daily choices and clinging to Him when we struggle with food addictions. It gives the Enemy an open door to our mental health. And it leaves many feeling too plagued with food-induced health problems to be effective ministers of God’s power.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. (Galatians 5:13)

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 1:19-20)

God has given us so much in His creation for our health–plants for food, plants for healing herbs and oils, and so much more. (Check out my post here contrasting the differences between what God has given us for medicine and conventional medicine and what Scripture says about this.) And since I have discovered this for myself, my family, and my clients, I have seen God’s blessings and glory poured out. It is so amazing, and it is my most sincere desire and my passion to see more of God’s people experience this.

But I would like to clarify–this message is intended for people who have already received their salvation and are secure in their eternal destiny. Because people who aren’t Christians usually don’t use this phrase.

For those who have NOT committed their lives to Jesus Christ and accepted His gift of eternal life, it would be better to lose your physical health than to lose your eternity. Living a healthy lifestyle will not matter if a person will spend eternity without God. For those who may be reading this and are not sure about their eternity, please feel free to contact me anytime to discuss this. Because if there has to be a choice, your eternity is far more important.

This post is for those who are seeking to honor God with their whole lives and not settle for just “working on the soul.” It is for those who desire to experience God’s goodness and His power in all areas of life and want to glorify Him in their stewardship. Because for those who truly do have God’s Spirit living inside of them, there is no need to choose between your soul and your body. God’s Spirit gives us the power to be victorious in all areas of life.

Blessings of good health,

~Sara Jo Poff

Thickened Formula: An Ineffective Health Risk?

Thickened Formula: An Ineffective Health Risk? is thickened formula for infants and thickening feed for the elderly really effective or is it causing health risks? Healthy Families for God

Despite evidence to the contrary, it is still common practice for pediatricians to recommend feed thickeners for infants with reflux and for it to be used in the elderly. Unfortunately, this common practice has not only been repeatedly shown to be ineffective but it has also proven to worsen health.

(Much of this info will be on the topic of feed thickener for infants but is also relevant to the use of thickened feed in the elderly as well with some research specific to its use in the elderly below.)

Let’s look at the evidence:

There is no evidence from randomised controlled trials to support or refute the efficacy of feed thickeners in newborn infants with GOR. Given the absence of evidence, we cannot recommend using thickening agents for management of GOR in newborn infants.1

Despite its frequent recommendation, there is little empirical evidence to support the use of thickened fluids in pediatric populations for the treatment of dysphagia or GERD…Speech-language pathologists who work in neonatal intensive care units and who work with other fragile infant populations must be aware of the risks associated with the use of thickened fluids in these populations and be prepared to provide alternative treatment options as appropriate.2

It has been shown in a crossover study using thickened and unthickened formula in random order, that thickening formulas can result in an increased number of coughing episodes 3

There have been anecdotal reports of acute bowel obstruction in neonates who have received feeds thickened with pectin and cellulose1

In 2012, the FDA had to issue a warning about a standard infant feed thickener product that was causing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a condition in which tissue in the intestines becomes inflamed and dies. At least seven infants died from the use of this product.4

In addition to NEC and other problems related directly to the feed thickener, this practice also ignores the root cause of the reflux and allows it to worsen.

Reflux usually is caused by one common root cause: Gut dysbiosis, aka leaky gut.

Leaky-Gut

This is where many things usually compile to leave baby without a healthy intestinal barrier and without a proper balance of beneficial flora in the gut which allows food proteins to enter the bloodstream through the openings in the gut wall. Once those food proteins enter the bloodstream, the body launches an antibody attack against those foods. Every time those food proteins enter the gut (either through direct consumption or through the presence of those food proteins in breastmilk/formula), more and more inflammation results.

Because that inflammation is pervasive in the mucus membranes of the body, other mucus membranes and organs begin to suffer, which is usually most concentrated to airways, digestive system, sinuses, etc.

This can result in not only reflux but an overloaded liver and gallbladder, chronic respiratory problems including sinus and ear infections, additional food sensitivities, environmental allergies, frequent sickness, and more.

Unfortunately, the thickening agents used in commercial feed thickener are among the food ingredients that contribute to breaking down the epithelial cells in the gut wall (rice and corn), making the problem worse. But because conventional medicine doesn’t often focus on the crucial importance of gut health, the impact of thickening agents in feed thickeners on the gut is ignored, and the link to secondary health problems caused by them like those listed above is missed. And in the situations that the thickened feed temporarily minimizes symptoms, it can mislead parents and healthcare providers to believe it is beneficial to baby when it is causing further damage to the intestinal wall.

This same action is pervasive and destructive in the elderly. Furthermore, there is also no evidence to support thickened feed in the elderly:

No strong evidence is available supporting the use of thickened liquids as an intervention for patients with dysphagia. The results of this study revealed no significant differences between these strategies on the primary outcome of pneumonia. Consequently, strong evidence for the preferential use of liquid thickening as a strategy in dysphagia intervention is not currently available.5

So What Can Be Done?

As always, what can and should be done is to get to the root of the problem. Address the gut-mediated food sensitivities related to leaky gut. Heal the gut and heal the reflux, frequent upper respiratory problems (runny nose, sinus problems, etc.), propensity to frequent sickness,  and other symptoms of gut-mediated food sensitivities will go away.

Discovering which foods are causing the problem and taking steps to healing the gut can be difficult, but they will go a long way in giving baby much-improved short- and long-term health.

In my professional experience and from my research, I have found that dairy sensitivity is the most common culprit, especially in infants whose mothers were given antibiotics during pregnancy/labor or if baby was given antibiotics directly.

Other common culprits besides dairy include gluten, soy, corn, and eggs.

A food elimination diet where all of these common offenders are eliminated for a period of at least six weeks would be a good first step. If baby is breastfed, these foods would need to be completely eliminated from mom’s diet. Introducing each food back into the diet one at a time and watching for symptoms like reflux and the others listed above will provide good clues to the potential trigger(s).

Food allergy tests are worthless in this area unless they are IgM or IgA tests, but most doctors only do IgE testing (which does not test for gut-mediated food allergies). Read my post on why most food allergy tests are completely worthless here.

The most fabulous resource on the topic that I cannot recommend enough is the book Gut & Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. This book goes in depth about the link between gut-mediated food problems, leaky gut, and health problems. It also has in-depth information about how to heal a leaky gut.

In addition to removing the offending food(s), cod liver oil, bone broth, and high-potency, allergen-free probiotics are three of the most crucial components to naturally healing the intestinal wall. For adults, a high-quality enzyme supplement would also be beneficial. (Click here for my Supplement Recommendations list.)

Click here to read my post about Gut Destroyers to make sure to avoid those things as well when healing the gut. Antibiotics, vaccines, consumption of refined sugars, and c-section birth are among the most common.

And click here to read my full post about Infant Reflux and why reflux meds for infants will do more damage than good.

As always, getting to the root cause is crucial and the only way to true healing.

It can be a journey, but the right help and support can help get you there. Instead of having to turn to conventional practices that are often harmful, natural health care helps you get to the root of health problems and address them using the things God has given us in order to experience the best health possible. Click here to read more about how to get my holistic healthcare services for free.

First-aid kit essentials by Healthy Families for God

All too often, I get emails about urgent health situations from people and when listing the things they need right away to treat it, many people do not have those things on hand and turn to conventional therapies which often make the problem worse. These natural things work and work well, but they only work if you have them on hand right away. Many of them can only be ordered online which is of course not ideal in an urgent situation.

So here are the things every natural first aid kit should have on hand at all times. Stock your cabinet with these things and when one thing runs out, replace it! I’ve included this list as a “Recipe Card” at the end so that you can easily print it off as well.

Please keep in mind that I cannot legally include what health issues some of these things are for. You can click here for information on my Free Services where you can message me anytime when something comes up for help determining which of these things to use.

For specific brand recommendations, go to my Supplement Recommendations List.

Master List of Natural First-Aid Essentials

  • Vitamin C (ascorbic powder/sodium ascorbate) with listed dosages of at least 1,000 mg/dose. This is for high-dose Vitamin C therapy which is very effective in MANY situations.
  • Probiotics: These should ideally be a part of a daily regimen anyway, either as probiotic/fermented foods or as a high-quality supplement.
  • Colloidal Silver: Everyone should have this on hand at all times! Fortunately, many grocery stores with natural food sections have this, but it is much cheaper online. http://www.vitacost.com/productresults.aspx?ta=sove&Ntt=soverign+silver
  • High-Quality Essential Oils: This is where most people devastate their health situation and their wallet in an emergency by buying store-bought essential oils. It is so important to have high-quality essential oils already on hand for when the need arises. Oregano, lavender, copaiba, tea tree, Thieves blend, and manuka essential oils are among the top ones I would recommend having on hand at all times. Store-bought essential oils, even those that say, “organic” or “pure” are not effective (and sometimes are not even safe) for reasons that I detail in my post here. Do yourself a favor–get a Premium Starter Kit and you’ve got yourself stocked for anything. (And if you do it through my essential oils website, you also get my services for free so you can contact me for help anytime!)
  • Inner Defense capsules: These capsules contain the strongest, most potent essential oils (including oregano) along with coconut oil in an easy-to-swallow capsule. Once you see how well these work for many things, you make sure to always have them on hand! My hubby doesn’t leave town without them!
  • Bentonite Clay: This is important for when you need to make a clay paste to use topically, oftentimes in conjunction with essential oils or colloidal silver, for very effective and fast-acting, um, skin support. 😉
  • Activated Charcoal: I have never had to use this (mostly because I have Inner Defense capsules), but if a need arises for this stuff, you really want to have it on hand!! If you’re a goat farmer like me, it’s crucial to have on hand in case your goats eat something poisonous as well!
  • Arnica Homeopathic Tablets: For pain relief, bruising, etc.

There are many other things that are a part of our natural cabinet, but these are the things that we most often reach for and find very effective for urgent health needs. If a client has all of these things, I can almost always recommend something(s) from this list in any urgent health situation that they may have and greatly enjoy receiving follow-up emails touting the success of these things!

A Simple Cure for Polyhydramnios?

polyhydramnios

I have a dear friend who is a research hound like me. She uses prayer combined with research to seek God’s wisdom for naturally treating health issues that her and her friends are facing, and God has been incredibly faithful to give her the information she seeks. In one situation, she had a friend who needed help for polyhydramnios, a condition during pregnancy where there is an excess of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac.

She found some recent research done on pregnant women to analyze the effects of Vitamin D on gestational diabetes. But a surprising finding of this research was:

those in the vitamin D group had no case of polyhydramnios, while 17.4% of subjects in placebo group had this condition1

The study concluded:

vitamin D supplementation for 6 weeks among pregnant women resulted in decreased maternal polyhydramnios.

In my friend’s case, she forwarded this research to her friend who began taking fermented cod liver oil as a source of natural Vitamin D. In just ten days of taking 1 to 2 tsp (5 to 10 mL) daily, her polyhydramnios was gone!

TEN DAYS.

Ten days of taking the recommended prenatal dosage of fermented cod liver oil.

Yet I look on all conventional medical articles on this topic and all they say is, “There is no known cause or treatment.” But it took my friend less than an hour to find this published medical research for Vitamin D. This happens with many things in the field of conventional medicine. Research demonstrating nutritional causes and treatments are ignored. Maybe it’s because there’s no profit in them. Of course there’s a lot of profit in induction, emergency c-section, and NICU care.

Whatever the reason, I encourage all our readers to pray and seek God’s wisdom. He has the answers for these things and wants to give them to us.

Keep in mind: Vitamin D deficiency is the cause of MANY adverse pregnancy outcomes. All women should test their Vitamin D level before becoming pregnant and/or once or twice during pregnancy to ensure the best possible health for baby and mom. This is a simple blood test that can be done by your provider (if they will do it) or you can click here to order a home test kit to test you Vitamin D level yourself.

When you order the test through my website, you are welcome to forward me the results of your test for some help calculating proper treatment dosage of Vitamin D based on your results.

For some other very important considerations on the topic of polyhydramnios that are not often discussed, please read this: https://midwifethinking.com/2013/08/14/amniotic-fluid-volume-too-much-too-little-or-who-knows/

Essential Oil Quality–The Problem With Relying Solely on GC/MS

$
0

The Only One For Me--HFFG

In essential oil groups, there is a lot of emphasis placed on purity, as there should be. Unfortunately, too much of that same emphasis is centered around GC/MS tests.

GC/MS is gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, one of many tests used to analyze an essential oil. While many essential oil users look to it as the surefire way to tell if an essential oil is good, it has many shortcomings. And relying upon this kind of testing can cause a lot of problems.

Contrary to popular belief, GC-MS tests are not a guarantee of purity. Many companies have figured out how to successfully manipulate an essential oil sample with additives and synthetics in correct proportions to make the GC/MS test result appear good.

GC-MS testing will not always reveal synthetic additives. If synthetic linalyl acetate is added to pure lavender, a GC-MS analysis alone cannot confidently determine whether that constituent is synthetic or natural, only that it is linalyl acetate.

Many people demand to see GC/MS test results of oils and prefer to buy from a company who publishes these tests, but there are so many problems with this. For example:

The other day a lady posted me on my Facebook and said, ”Well, this other company sends out their GC’s, how come Young Living doesn’t?”

I posted her back and said, ”Would you know how to read it if I did?”

Anybody can create anything they want with a GC. What if they spike their oil with a small amount of a strong synthetic chemical and then use only a single 30-meter-column GC?  The chemical won’t show up!

So just having a GC printout is meaningless unless you’re an analytical chemist and know how to read it. So why would I waste all the paper just sending them out when no one would even have a clue how to read them? Is there anybody reading this who can look at a GC report and tell me what they’re looking at? I rest my case.

~D. Gary Young, Founder of Young Living  http://www.dgaryyoung.com/blog/2014/requests-for-a-gc-ms-analysis/

Here’s a great example of how deceptive GC/MS tests that make an essential oil appear pure can be:

The methods for adulterating or even reconstructing essential oils have reached an astounding level of refinement. For example Lavender EO. It contains, in an authentic sample, the terpene alcohol linalool. The proportion of linalool in different Lavender EO may well vary to some degree. While the addition 5% of natural linalool, derived from another EO, can ultimately be proven by strenuous analytical effort, routine GC/MS will not detect it. In other words neither GC/MS or any other instrumental method alone can prove authenticity of an essential oil.

That this is so can be verified by looking at some of the analyses posted on the internet. These analyses ostensibly demonstrate the purity of an oil, but anyone familiar with the composition of authentic Fine Lavender will notice quickly that quite some of the posted chromatograms reflect EO which are reconstructed to varying degrees.

~Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, Founder of the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy

Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt (who is not affiliated in any way with Young Living) issued a blog post to reprimand the industry for putting so much emphasis on GC/MS tests. Responding to the results from one particular tester announcing that he found Young Living’s cinnamon bark essential oil to be adulterated, Dr. Schnaubelt had to step in:

Recent events surrounding potential adulteration of Cinnamon Bark oil from a large corporate supplier have inadvertently highlighted the problems associated with the overemphasis of instrumental analysis and especially GC/MS analysis, for proving the purity of essential oils.

We all have become so accustomed to the power of computation that we forget that there sometimes are sizable margins of error in the data that are generated. In our case the exclusive reliance on instrumental analysis and especially GC/MS has its own set of problems. The most overlooked issue is the way GC/MS are ran today…

I could go on and on about the idiosyncrasies and the potential for wrong conclusions in the process of interpreting GC/MS data… Most Mass Spec library setups are hopelessly over challenged when it comes to precise IDs for complex sesquiterpene mixtures. The take away message here is that even and especially computerized interpretation of the Mass Spectra of a GC/MS is not immune to delivering incorrect results.

To quite some degree the reliability of such interpretations is based on the quality of the library. I.e an operator who has analyzed EO for ten years and added and added specific EO components to her or his specific library will have a better chance than someone else who starts out with a store bought library of common chemical components.1

Now you will notice the main point in his last paragraph is that it’s completely open to interpretation depending on the age of the tester’s library. Young Living has been testing essential oils for decades and thus has a much larger library database. There is simply more data to interpret results with than other labs who have less experience. And it took a leading, independent expert in the field to finally get this truthful message out among the circulating deceit. Dr. Schnaubelt concluded:

I could discuss this endlessly, but suffice it to say, instrumental analysis is a very valuable tool in working with essential oils, but when it comes to the appreciation for truly authentic oils it will never replace the human element. One of my mentors once told me the real way to ascertain authenticity is to see the growing plants, the still and ideally be present during distillation and obtain a sample fresh from the still.1

Young Living is the only company with the Seed to Seal guarantee where customers/members can actually see the plants growing and be present during distillation. With no other company being able to offer this, it’s a no-brainer which essential oils I am going to use for my family!

Will you join me at Young Living’s lavender farm in Utah next year to see how the plants are grown and distilled?!!

Keeping Goats Healthy Naturally with Essential Oils by HFFG

If you’ve raised goats, you know that it’s HARD. They are so prone to parasites and other things. Most goat owners use toxic chemical products to keep their parasite load low.

When we got goats, I knew without a doubt that I was going to raise them naturally. That’s how I do everything and it’s always worked. But what I didn’t realize is that this hasn’t been done successfully very often. Even herbal groups were having a hard time keeping their goats healthy with just herbs.

We used herbs, garlic, copper (goats have a high copper requirement), and other things. And we still were battling for their health constantly.

I almost gave up, but my discouragement is what always leads me to endless hours of research. And that research has been the most amazing thing that has happened to our adventures in raising goats. We have had the most incredible, amazing health in our goats since I found this research and have been putting it into practice that I want the whole goat world to know it!

So let me share with you what we’ve learned and how we use essential oils to keep our goats healthy naturally.

First Things First

The first and most important thing, though, is purity. 98% of essential oils are produced for the perfume industry. These are laden with toxic extenders, other plant products than what is listed on the bottle, and they are not produced to provide therapeutic benefits.

If you spend hours reading the research studies, you’ll notice that many of them actually produced the essential oil themselves for the study. Those are the most reliable studies because you know the results are actually from the plant properties and not altered by any adulteration of the oil.

And even if you buy one that says things like “100% pure” and even “organic,” that doesn’t matter if the essential oil was not distilled correctly to retain the therapeutic benefits. Because let’s face it–using something that isn’t going to work, even if it doesn’t have any dangerous additives, is dangerous because it’s like essentially doing nothing. And with goats, time is of the essence! The Only One For Me: Why I use only one company's essential oils after two years of research---HFFG

If you missed my post detailing this and other things I discovered in my two years researching essential oils, click here and read it now! It’s very important info, especially when you are relying on something to keep your animals (and family!) healthy!

Another reason I only use Young Living essential oils is because they are the first and only company to have a dietary line of essential oils. (Click here to learn more about that.) If I am going to be using essential oils internally/orally with my goats, I want them to be safe for that use! And most essential oils are NOT safe for internal use!

Please, I beg you: Do NOT use store-bought essential oils on your goats at all, but especially not orally.

The Research I Found for Goats

So after my hours and hours of scouring research for goats, here’s what we use for our goats:

Keeping goats healthy with essential oils

We use orange, R.C. (for its blend of eucalyptus oils), and oregano essential oils with our goats regularly.

Please take the time to read each of these reference links below to see exactly which oils can help for various needs specific to goats. There are some legal compliance regulations that prevent me from being able to state specifically what I use these oils for, so you’ll have to click on the research and read it for yourself!

Eucalyptus citriodora: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21961753

Eucalyptus globulus: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3141301/

Oregano: http://www.mofga.org/Publications/MaineOrganicFarmerGardener/Spring2010/Regano/tabid/1556/Default.aspx

Eucalyptus staigeriana: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0304401710003377

Orange: http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publications.htm?seq_no_115=252377

Myrrh: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11508399

parafree

ParaFree™ is formulated with an advanced blend of some of the strongest essential oils studied for their cleansing abilities.* This formula also includes the added benefits of sesame seed oil and olive oil.

So here’s what I do (trying to phrase this all to keep it compliant here as I am limited to what I can say…):

Dosing

We give our goats the above-referenced essential oils (orange, oregano, and eucalyptus blend) in their organic grains for three days every week. (Myrrh is expensive and as you can see from the study above, is only indicated for one particular thing so we use that one sparingly.)

Interpreting the dosages used in the studies above proved to be quite difficult, even with recruiting some veterinary help, so what we do for maintenance dosing is 1 drop each of oregano and eucalyptus blend per 40 pounds and 2 drops of orange per 40 pounds.

What we could interpret from the studies is that the amounts the animals were given to be effective were quite high, much higher than what most people would even use, and that lower amounts were less effective, so getting a high enough dosage is crucial. Insufficient doses will make it appear that the oils are not working.

The dosage above that we use is for maintenance dosing. In the event of an acute situation, dosages would need to be higher of course.

Since our goats normally only get grains during milking season, I had to figure out a way to get them their oils without grains. As you may know, adding essential oils to water isn’t that great because the oils settle on the surface of the water, making it hard to get all the goats their specific dosages evenly.

So what we do for using essential oils in their water trough is using a few dispersants. Dispersants help keep the essential oils blended throughout the water, making sure that all of the goats get the essential oils.

Here is a post with a good list of various dispersants that can be used: http://www.holistichealthherbalist.com/forget-mustache-use-dispersant-mix-essential-oils-water/

For our goats, we mostly use aloe gel/juice, bentonite clay, and sometimes molasses. Food-grade diatomaceous earth works fairly well too. All of these things are safe and beneficial for goats, especially the aloe gel.

To use these, mix your chosen dispersant in a container with the essential oils and mix well. Add the dispersant and essential oil combination into your water container and fill with water, mixing as you fill. You can experiment a little with small containers in your kitchen to find what things work best for you and your goats as a dispersant.

Another way to dose goats with essential oils, and a way we use with (goat) kids especially, is using an oral syringe and mixing with a carrier oil like olive oil.

Concerns About Liver & Gastrointestinal Effects of Essential Oils

Some have concerns about the effect of the oils on the liver and gastrointestinal health of the animal. With pure oils, research has shown us that they are actually very beneficial to liver and gastrointestinal health:

How Do Essential Oils Affect the Liver?

Despite what some bloggers say, essential oils have actually been proven to SUPPORT healthy gut flora!

Here are just two of the many studies proving this:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2672.2005.02789.x/full

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26539506
(Note in this one, it actually increased beneficial flora!)

Not only do essential oils support healthy flora but they also multiply it due to the synergistic, complementary effects! The following study concluded:

“Probiotics and essential oils… show a synergistic effect that is normally higher than any known drug due to their complementary actions. Since most of these medicinal plants are edible, their extracts as food product do not have any side effects with low dosage. Therefore, these products may be very beneficial for human beings.”

I encourage you to read the full study for yourself as there is so much more in it!  http://www.hindawi.com/journals/grp/2012/457150/

I have also found specific research that has studied the effect of essential oils on ruminant animals, and they all found the same thing: That they did not negatively affect rumen health or function and reduced methane output. 😉

You can click here to read my in-depth post Ingesting Essential Oils: Getting the Facts Straight.

There are many other ways we use essential oils with our goats. For instance, lavender to help calm them down when they are going to a new home or for blood draws (pregnancy tests), the Thieves blend for topical/skin needs, etc. We also use Thieves dishsoap as an udder wash and make an udder balm with peppermint and other essential oils.

Using pure essential oils with goats is a win win!! I hope you’ll give pure essential oils a try with your goats!

How To Support Liver Health Powerfully & Naturally

support-liver-health

The liver is one of the most important, yet one of the most undervalued, organs in our body. It has over 500 vital functions that it is responsible for. As just a few examples, the liver is responsible for:

  • Regulating blood clotting
  • Clearing the blood of toxins
  • Converting excess glucose into starch for storage
  • Excreting waste via bile
  • Converting hormones and vitamins into forms the body can use (sex hormones, Vitamin D, Vitamin A from carotenoids, etc.)
  • Producing glutathione, the body’s single most powerful antioxidant
  • Production of cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body
  • Processing of hemoglobin for use of its iron content (the liver stores iron)
  • Clearance of bilirubin

Just having a well-functioning liver can drastically improve health! But we live in a world that is full of things that stand to work against a healthy liver! Because of that, it is crucial that everyone supports their liver health. This is especially important for women during pregnancy as there are a lot of demand on the liver to eliminate more toxins and hormones.

Here are my favorite ways to really support liver health, all of which are natural and very effective.

D-Limonene

D-Limonene is a powerful, health-supporting substance found in citrus fruits, especially the rinds. Young Living’s citrus oils are cold pressed from the rinds and are high in D-Limonene.

Limonene from YL Essential OilsD-Limonene activates Phase 1 & 2 liver detox enzymes, supporting the body’s natural detoxification process which helps promote hormone balance as well as overall great health.

It also supports digestion and gallbladder health, weight management, the body’s natural inflammatory response, and is a potent antioxidant.1 2

D-Limonene is so great that many manufacturers are offering isolated D-Limonene supplements. But getting it naturally from high-quality, dietary essential oils is a more desirable form.

As a holistic health practitioner finishing up my naturopathy doctor degree, I am concerned about warnings against ingesting essential oils. These over-cautious warnings prevent people from obtaining these wonderful health benefits from citrus essential oils labeled for dietary use and do so in a time where many people really need support in these areas of health.

For my full post with the facts about ingesting essential oils, go here:  http://healthyfamiliesforgod.com/2016/01/ingesting-essential-oils-facts-straight/

*Please see notes below and only use Young Living’s Vitality essential oils which are approved and labeled specifically for dietary use. Do NOT use any brand of essential oil that is not intended for internal use! This could be harmful to your health instead of beneficial!

Chlorella

Chlorella vulgaris is a unicellular, freshwater algal organism widely consumed for its nutritional and health benefits. Chlorella contains high concentrations of protein, fiber, an array of vitamins and minerals, and the green pigment chlorophyll.

Research indicates the chlorophyll component of Chlorella contributes significantly to its detoxifying effects. It is a powerful supplement that initiates and supports healthy phases 1 and phase 2 detox processes.

Most chlorella supplements are derived from chlorella harvested in China or Japan which can have high levels of contaminants. My preferred brand is made by ProThera in a product called Dual Detox which has chlorella derived from Korea as well as other things to support liver function. It is safe for everyone including children and pregnant/breastfeeding mothers. Please click here to read my full post on Detox 101 and the Power of Chlorella.

(Note: My website store is currently unavailable so I am not able to sell my Chlorella Detox supplement. I hope to be able to open my website store in the future as a high-quality chlorella supplement that is not from China or Japan and has the enzymes and other benefits like this one is very hard to find.)

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle (which has the scientific name Silybum marianum) is actually considered a “weed” but is very beneficial for liver health. There is a vast wealth of published medical research showing milk thistle’s strong ability to support the liver’s detoxification process, even from very harmful things, and to even support the liver’s natural regeneration of cells.3

In my personal and professional experience, milk thistle is an herb that is powerful yet very mild. It is especially helpful during pregnancy and for supporting female hormones in teenage girls up to menopause-age women!

The cheapest way to take milk thistle is to buy milk thistle seed powder in bulk (I buy mine from Frontier Herbs as a wholesale member) and make it into capsules myself with a capsule machine. I add in some of the essential oils listed below for additional support if/as needed.

Turmeric

Turmeric may very well be the most-researched herb ever. This spice usually used in curry dishes has many researched benefits, including supporting liver health. Its main compound known as curcumin has long been connected to liver health. It works in multiple ways to support the liver’s detoxification process. Turmeric also strongly supports the body’s natural response against inflammation.

Turmeric is safe, beneficial, and makes foods delicious! The cheapest way to take turmeric consistently is to make it into capsules like mentioned above for milk thistle. Because turmeric’s health properties are magnified with the synergy of black pepper, I add a drop of Young Living’s Vitality black pepper essential oil to each capsule.

(See below picture for more info.)

Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage that has incredible liver-supporting properties that has been demonstrated through research.4  It is the ONLY reason we have refined (organic) cane sugar in our home! The fermentation process converts the sugars into the finished fermented product full of liver-supporting acids and nutrients. Kombucha is one of those things that the benefits can be noticed almost immediately for most people, so start slowly if you’ve never had it before!

Digestive Enzymes

Having the proper amount of stomach acid, good gallbladder function, liver health, and eating the right foods allows the body to produce proper digestive enzymes necessary for digesting things like fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. But since many people do not meet many, if any, of these criteria, a good digestive enzyme can help support liver health.

My favorite digestive enzyme supplements are from Young Living. There are many options so I usually tailor the recommended product to each person’s individual needs.

Additional Essential Oils

But essential oils are harmful to the liver, right?!! There are multiple essential oils that have been shown through a lot of research to actually support liver health! I wrote all about this in a post here: http://yldist.com/godscents/how-do-essential-oils-affect-the-liver/

You can see from that research that pure, dietary essential oils like copaiba, clove, rosemary, thyme, and a few others including lemon as detailed above are proven to be very beneficial to liver health!

These were capsules I made for targeted liver support as well as supporting a nice, strong response to inflammation! Check out the studies for yourself to see why I chose these copaiba and clove to go with the turmeric and milk thistle! (Not shown in the photo but I also added black pepper as indicated above.)
